Build me my compter
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:06:21 am »
I need help, and I don't know half the Jargon of PC's. So please help.

I need an Upgrade on my PC or I need to be simply told "Get a new PC".

I have a Presario V2000 Laptop, with now battery (It died), 256MB of RAM, 1.30 Ghz Intel Celeron Processor. It has XP installed, WITHOUT Office. 64MB Video Card. Direct X 8.1 I think.

Problems:
- I have, In total, 37GB of memory. What kind of a number is that?
That's not used, or Un-used, that's in total. I need more memory.
- Butt-slow. Freezes every 45 seconds. It froze as I was writing this. Takes 20 mins to turn on. Sucks. Firefox takes about 5mins (after that 20mins) to pop up.
-Soldat BARELY runs.
-Battlefield Vietnam (My fav. Game) won't work, it can't handle it.

How should I upgrade it?
Alternatively, should I can this laptop and get a new one as it would be cheaper?

Well your hardware is comparable to the average PC from 8 or 9 years ago.

If your laptop is as old as I think it is then get a new PC/laptop, there's no point in upgrading it if you need to upgrade every part.

What do you want to use your computer for? Intense gaming or just for browsing the web? Tell us what you plan to use it for and then we can provide you with adequate specs.

Don't even think about upgrading it. What you got there is a paperweight.

What is your budget? Box or laptop? Buying a new box will be twice as fast for half the price.

You'll definitely want a desktop.

Here's what you'll need to do.
Buy the following

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115031 <CPU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171018 < PSU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121253&Tpk=Asus%2b4850 < Graphics card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811233039 < Case

Take it to Geek Squad. They'll recommend a mobo. Tell them specifically to NOT get one with an integrated graphics card, as it'll cost more. Have them put it together and buy the necessary other parts. Choose 'yer own Hard Drives.

Also buy a 120mm fan and have them install it in the front.

It's no good telling him what to buy until you know what he wants to use it for.

If he just wants it for playing Soldat, E-mail, chat and browsing the web then he isn't going to need expensive top of the line stuff. But if he wants it for gaming, particularly new games then he will need plenty of memory, a decent processor and a great graphics card.

If you're serious about building a PC try and get at least 2 gigs ram and a GPU with ddr3 ram.

If you're serious about building a PC then don't watch tutorials on youtube. Motherboards come supplied with all the instructions you need and if you can't follow them then you shouldn't be building in the first place.

Funnily enough I'm actually building a PC myself at the moment.

Not necessarily. I had to watch Youtube videos on how to change the fan on your GPU because I can't be bothered reading a page long article.

OK, I think that the budget is $1000. My PC is 2 years old (And it was new then). I didn't get it, my parents did (I wasn't allowed to have a say in the buying of it).

I want to browse the 'net and run Microsoft office without it freezing every 3 seconds!

I'm looking for laptop, not desktop.

I'm thinking 1GB RAM, Intel Core duo 2 and 128MB graphics. I don't want a gaming computer, although I would like it to handle BF2 and BF:V. I'm looking for a simple PC that is fast with a descent amount of memory. That would be great.

You cannot build a laptop like you can a desktop. This dell should fit your budget nicely.

Just don't buy support. Dell might go bankrupt in the next couple years. Also, new deals come out on Thursdays. So buy before then.
