Do something more with the first one, other than chop one corner off and it would be better.

The second one is much better.
To fix the first one I'd suggest making the border thinner.

Still, stay with the second one.

I personally like the 1st one, but I find it too plain. Needs some words perhaps, for the 1st one.

So, I'd say, the second picture. But the border could be improved a little.

Reduce the height of #1 so that there's no redundant space above or below the Soldier and then use that as a sig.

Then use #2 as an avatar.

Based on what may I ask? The military style helmet? (which is clearly actually retro-futurist, it looks more like Vietnam-era style helmet with futuristic modifications... the aviators make it look that era too)

Looks like a helicopter pilot helmet, and is sorta desert-colored, somehow these contribute to the theme of BHD
