Pirates! Tried it?
« on: September 03, 2008, 10:41:28 am »
Oi!
So I'm a huge fan of pirates. the myths, the stories, the movies(though not a big fan of the.. exotic one). I've been looking for some cool pirate games, but there never seems to be any good around, other than ancient ones such as Port Royale, which is fun for an hour. So I've been looking at Sid Meier's Pirates!, but I'm a little anxious to buy it, since those kinds of games usually flop. So have any of you guys tried it, and is it worth anything? looks rather good..

lemme know,
echo

Why don't you download it rather. I'm playing it atm it's pretty cool but now that I've got the best ship it's super easy and I just can't be arsed running around the map for the silly quests anymore. I just take cities try to piss everyone off as much as I can. But it's a great game and challenging on the hardest difficulty.

Really? Wicked.. No, i usually buy my games. I find it that games are always full of flaws and whatnot if you download it. But thanks, I'm definitely gonna get it. Is it like a trading game as well?

Yeah, but not really advanced as Port Royale. The battle's are really arcade, and they're fun. You have to strategize a bit, but you can correct your mistakes easily, unlike in simulations. Also you're able to really advance and then it's like Outcast said. Really easy to conquer the whole map. Just don't overplay it in the beginning, try to save some fun for later. When it gts boring, chalenge yourself and start attacking with smaller ships. Use your agility rather than firepower and that sort of stuff. Kill the crew, board them, or disable th sails and then it's really easy. Or try to use your big ship to board a smaller one and win easily. One of the rewarding strategies is boarding a bigger ship full of crew, and if you're confident in your swordplay skills, you should try to defeat the other captain really quickly for an easy victory.

Pirates!- Decent all-round loot-em-up game, and the best in my opinion. Though it can quickly get boring if you don't put the difficulty settings up.

Pirates of the Carribean- The original PoC game by Bethesda Softworks that has almost nouthing to do with the movie it markets itself on. The views from both outside the ship and standing on the top deck can make for epic battle scenes, and the main quest is interesting too. But it doesn't have much reply value, especially when the Ship of the Line you get at the end makes battles just way too easy, even though you deserve it. And while it doesn't have Morrowind's Plugin system, there are still some good mods for it out there, inlcuding ones to make it more like the movies.

Port Royale 2- More of a commerce sim than a pirate sim; since the only way you can be a pirate without everyone hating you is to be a privateer, which then means that you have to wait for a war to start to get some offensive combat action. Though the commerce side of it is quite advanced.

I hope that helps. :)

What the game is missing are fleet battles. I want a fleet to engage me, because even when there's 2 ships(1 plus escort) they never come anywhere near killing me. Ship Of The Line is so overpowered :Q
I'll go try that attacking with smaller ships like Will said... <_<

Oh, I thought you were talking about this. I was like, it's really old. I played a pirate game once, Voyage Century. Free MMO, sucked. Kind of liked it personally, but I played it for like three minutes. Might try one though, one of these.

That strategy didn't work in Port Royale 2. I was destroyed by that Spanish Treasure fleet.

Also I think Brig of war is one of the best smaller ships in Pirates! altough I may have easily mistaken it or something similliar because I haven't played that game in 2 years. The fact that I remember so many details is fascinating because of the sheer number of games I get to play and then throw away. Damn you EA, damn you!

I know what you mean. It'ds hard to stick to just one game alone when there are so many goodies out there. It's like pawn!

So, does it by any chance have multiplayer?

Argh, it's gonna take 10 days before I have the game. I think I'm gonna cancel and download it anyway.

Yeah it's ship of the line...You have to seriously piss off one of non spanish nations and they will send one from 1 town to the one you've been fucking up economically. It will never attack and it's very rare. You'll probably have to attack ships from the same port for a month or three.

Yeah, I read about it. Sailing fully upgradet Pirate Warship right now.. anyway, I'm trying to save my sister, but I can't seem to find the damn lass. I know she's south of "Anchor Something", and I found the place and headed inland. But the stupid piratemap is so inaccurate. You guys know how to find her?

You look for her? If you know where she is just look around a bit and you'll find a cottage....It's really not that hard.

Yeah, so you would think. But themarkings on the chard matches a number. See, there not only one "dead tree" or "indian totem" around, so knowing she's between one of each doesn't really help me.
