Magic the Gathering
« on: September 03, 2008, 04:33:00 pm »
Anyone play it? I know many have played it "back in the day" but it is now "not as good as it used to be" which is my main question, what changed that was so awful. Anything specific? I personally am a fan I just don't feel like spending the money to actually get cards. (Though I am thinking about buying a couple for some really fun combos) For those who don't know what it is, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_the_gathering. Card game that is significantly better than any other I have ever seen.

I played back in the day. The deck I built was old when I started though. I never lost a game, then again; I never found a challenge.

The computer game was fun.... I wonder if there is a multiplayer version out now...

mmm...I know about Magic the Gathering, but not enough to play properly in any casual game or tournaments.

Offtopic: Yu-gay-hoe was good back in the days when Cyber Jar ruled the scene. Now it's just...I dunno, bunch of broken cards and boring monsters? :/

Pokemon cards kicked ass, but now the new monsters spoil the game. I might buy a deck of magic and gather, depending if anyone even plays the game.

Edit: I never knew there were "beta" version of cards. O.o

I enjoyed card games, but ever since Yu-Gay-Hoe came out, I decided to quit the game.

I don't know about the current ban list, but I know earlier in the year the ban list allowed someone to build a deck that CONSISTENTLY won on the first turn.  That's broken.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.

pokemon was fun, but nobody actually had a deck, they just collected the cards.  and yu-gi-oh is getting lame cause the new cards r overpowered, only magic still remains fun, but i remember getting this rare card from a booster pack and the affect of it was something like this creature type gets +1/+1 and contraption costs one less to make, and the card was the only card that was classified under this creature type and they never decided to make any contraption card, so completely useless.-_-

Having played it "back in the day" doesn't make it any better and doesn't even make a good excuse. You were just younger and less perceptive, the game was equally as lame.

Real men collected Warhammer instead.

The only thing that is changing at the moment is creature power creep and planeswalker, before it was color pie and a certain creature entering gameplay. The only MAJOR thing that changed from around 6th edition I believe was the introduction of new rules and "the stack".

Thats only if you played before then, but I prefer the new rules. Its a damn fun game, especially in limited formats.

Its called house rules, or if you play competitive just steer clear of vintage and stuff. T2 would be the best to play for the actual mechanics of the game if you want to play constructed (build a deck from a predetermined cardpool).

I play magic currently, only limited though, specifically a format called drafting. I draft each friday.

This is how it works:

You buy 3 packs of a block thats legal in t2, and you and 7 other (or more) people sit at a table. You open open one pack of cards, and you pick one card from that pack. You then pass that pack to the player on your left who has just done the same thing. You get passed a pack from the right and pick a card out of the now 14 cards, you pass again. You do this with EACH pack until you have 45 cards that you drafted.

You make your deck out of these 45 cards with land provided by the tournament host. Decks can be 40 cards or more (including land). This means you probably use 22-24 cards and the appropriate land depending on your pool.  You then play the people who drafted that night against their decks.

Its a much better way of playing, in my opinion, and ultimately less expensive if you "rare" draft or sell your cards afterwards as all I do is draft or sealed, I don't need to collect anything.

Its steamflogger boss a "futuresight" rare, fromt he set futuresight where they made cards that would hint at the newer sets to come. Apparently the boss was a joke, though some want it not to be.

I used to play it, however my budget renew rate is lower than the rate that new cards come out, so I quit. It's quite good, but in competitive plays you see the same cards over and over again. Tagomorpf(whatever its spelt)... like come on

Smeg, then all the rare would be gone by the first round...then the uncommon ones..then the common... So whoever starts first gets so much advantage..

Not all uncommons are as good as commons, and not all rares are as good as uncommons. Sometimes your first pick is a COMMON, you don't play for "rarity" you play to win.

And by the way, EVERYONE has 3 packs. So everyone OPENS a pack at the same time and picks ONE card from 15, then they get passed a new 14, picks, then a new 13, so on.

I play it online with MWS now and then, used to play 4 years ago. Playing T2, Extended and Legacy atm. My favourite format is Limited alias Booster Draft though.
I like to have one Martini
Two at the very most
Three I'm under the table
Four I'm under the host

My friend likes the booster draft, but I play to casually to want to do that. My main problem is it gets expensive. I also hate really old cares that are completely broken that I want but costs like $500 or more. But its overall a fun game.

The most fun deck (and probably the worst one I used) was to have a 2/2 creature with shadow and buffed with permanent enchantments. its basically a steady unstoppable drain on their health.
