It's not really even that clever. It would maybe be something if it weren't on a grid, but that would border on stupidity. Really though the whole trick is based on a lie in the explanation.Really, anyone who's been through the 6th grade should get it.
Actually, Mangled, you're wrong. I'd rather not give the answer away to everyone though, so I'll let you figure it out.
The green 3x5 and the red 3x8 triangles have a slightly different angle. So the upper oblique line has a kink, either down or up. The difference in total area makes up for the square.
