That's one hell of a picture I've ever seen in a while, never thought that could happen....

It's not really even that clever. It would maybe be something if it weren't on a grid, but that would border on stupidity. Really though the whole trick is based on a lie in the explanation.

Really, anyone who's been through the 6th grade should get it.

Yeah the grid kinda ruins the effect. Also you can kinda figure it out when the triangles are moving past eachother.

It's a bunch of shapes that can only be arranged one way to form a triangle. Another way they form an incomplete triangle and that confuses you if you aren't capable of thought.

Actually, Mangled, you're wrong. I'd rather not give the answer away to everyone though, so I'll let you figure it out.

Or you could just look at the answer on the site.

The green 3x5 and the red 3x8 triangles have a slightly different angle. So the upper oblique line has a kink, either down or up. The difference in total area makes up for the square.
For those retards like me who don't understand it at all. I still don't get it anyway, I just figure that that square gets filled because of the slice of smallish square parts while moving the triangles that finally make a whole square, but its rly hard :D

Simply put the two triangles of the set of shapes are right triangles. This means their angle where the x axis meets the hypotenuse can be defined with tan^-1 (y/x).

Since they both have different x then they do not have the same angles. This means that the "straight" line (well there are two straight lines at different angles wrt x axis) you see isn't such. So its not a triangle to begin with which explains wraithlike's claim about a lie in the explanation and why mangled's is incorrect.

I think

The grid completely ruined it.
