Sounds like BS, but then again, the difference between those two is that the room temperature water is still and it has very little particle movement as opposed to the boiling water where the particles are moving constantly and thus able to change and adapt to a different temperature faster.

They tried that shit on Brainiac, and it's true, boiling hot water freezes faster.

I have had two torches ruined by battery leakage.

Why do batteries leak?

I always put at least one battery in backwards when I won't be using the torch for a while, so it can't accidentally be turned on and drain the batteries completely. Is this a good idea, or can it lead to battery leakage?

Are there ways to minimize the chance of a battery leak?

Don't do that. It probably isn't the cause, but it's generally a bad idea. Just tape over the on switch or something (or just take the batteries out).

Usually when batteries leak it's because they are cheap or get stored in bad conditions (wet or hot). The best way to avoid this is to A) buy better batteries, and B) store them in dry, cool places.

The only times it's happened to me though is when I mixed rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries. Be sure all the batteries in something are the same type.

Sometimes when I start downloading something my d/l speed is like 400kbyte/s, but it quickly goes back down to my actual internet speed of ~170kbyte/s.  When this happens, am I literally downloading at 400kb/s for that brief moment?
