There is an SD card reader on the front of my case.

When I put an SD card in it, I can read it fine, but I cannot delete anything in any way (delete, cut or format), also tried with the handy tool unlocker, but that didn't work.

The physical lock tab on the SD card is not in the lock position.

My guess is that it is because it has sharing turned on for some reason, but I can not turn sharing off as the share button under properties > Sharing is greyed out.

How can I get the reader un-shared or some other non pain in the ass way to get stuff deleted. At the moment I can only delete picures through the camera that I use the SD card with, which is slow.

I don't see what sharing would have anything to do with it. Maybe the card reader is owned by a user other than you and you need admin privileges to do anything non-read only to it?

Ok you were right about the sharing.

Whenever I try to put stuff on the card or format it, it tells me the drive is write protected. Nothing in the properties of the reader relates to any kind of protection, so how would I turn it off?

Could there be some sort of write-protect switch on the actual card reader?

I can only think of permission settings which don't allow you to delete or modify the files. Not sure if in this case it's the same as sharing.

If you have Windows XP Pro - go to Control Panel-->Folder Options. There switch to "View" tab, scroll down to the bottom of the list and uncheck "Use simple file sharing".
This will enable advanced settings for file and folder permissions.

Let me know if you need further info on how to change permissions.

@jrgp: There is no write protect switch, pulled apart right down to the chip board.

@L[one]R: Using vista currently. Not the same option, but a similar one called use file sharing wizard, turned it off. The only way it seems to set permissions is through properties>sharing>advanced sharing, but even if I set the permissions for everyone to full control, it wont let me do anything other than copy off. Also, the security tab (where I would normally go to change permissions) is not there.

I don't have Vista, so I can't say much. :S
What you can try though... just copy all the files off your SD card and reformat it?

Boot an ubuntu livecd and see if you can edit the files that are on there. If you can, it's a Windows mis-config. If you can't, it's a switch you still haven't found.

Ubuntu throws an error saying the file system is read-only.

According to windows, file system is FAT.

I guess your question turned out bit more complex than expected. ;O

Have you tried reformatting the SD card with the camera itself?

hmm. Well, try another SD card in the same slot to make sure it's not the card reader.

dumb question, but is the SD card locked? like the little switch on the side of it.

Dumb indeed. ;P

So even after that you still can't use it on your computer? I get a feeling that it really could be the problem with the card reader. Or your computer.
Like jrgp said - try a different SD card with the same card reader. Also try using that card reader on a different computer.

Need your help. I recently installed Windows 7 on my computer, and everything works except my microphone. Any of you had this problem? I was thinking maybe the drivers werent properly updated or something, but seeing as I know shit about computers, I'll need your help on that as well.

Check the microphone, these bastards have sometimes a on/off switch.
Last year, I dreamt I was pissing at a restroom, but I missed the urinal and my penis exploded.
