I think, as of now, they're only accelerating particles in one direction at a time (counterclockwise then clockwise).  Unless I'm mistaken the first actual collision has not taken place.

You are correct. No collisions will be happy until October, most likely.

Just for clarification, the Large Hadron Collider isn't in France, it's in Switzerland- a country that borders France.

I never understood why its so important to know this stuff, with all the money and manpower and brainpower it took to make some particle slingshot we could have tried to end world hunger or cure a disease.
Too easy, solving the mysteries of the world is more important.
I think its all a conspiracy. They took the 9 billion, made a huge underground racetrack, and are staging horse races. Pocketing the rest of the 9 billion because it doesn't take that much to build a huge racetrack. I mean come on, how easy is it to dupe the French.
No, we won't invade you, we just want the land we had before WWI.

Kinda hard to race horses in such a small dark place.

From what I recall hearing about it 2 months ago. It is causing controversial because it is big, expensive and if it works correctly, it will be able to destroy the world.

It wont destroy the world, scientists like Stephen Hawking have said that it's 100% safe, yes it can cause absolutely small black holes but they are so small that they collapse/steam away instantly due to the size.

maybe i'm just not updated but did we even know how to create black holes in the firstplace? isn't this an amazing discovery by itself?

seeing how (afaik) this is a first time humanity created black holes, on purpose or not, don't you think it'd be abit dangerous seeing as how we don't really know that much about them or their growth?

oh yeah, and the actual colliding will take place atleast in october 21 or later.

Well it's the skeptics saying it causes black holes, no one knows really does it really create 'em or not. We'll have to wait for the real colliding tests to begin, which like you said, will take place in October.

we really don't know enough about the physics of black holes to be able to tell whether they'll be created or not. as far as i can tell from wikipedia, there is evidence to suggest that high energy collisions, such as those in the LHC could cause micro black holes. but there is little evidence to suggest that a black hole that small could exist for anything more than a very small fraction of a second.

Those micro black holes exsist all around us and happen billions of times every second. I remember seeing a topic on another forum with a large amount of info, but it stated that the lhc can't produce anything near the power that these billions of collisions do. It also referred to the universe as being one massive super collider, because these collisions have happened for as long as we can tell and nothing has ever gone wrong before. Apparently these micro black holes give off radiation that the physicists believe could be harnessed for energy, but they "evaporate" too quickly to harvest this energy. I could be completely wrong.

here's the link:

It has sources and everything if you're interested. I don't know enough about it to discuss it, but i'm interested in what will happen come october.
Lol, internets.

@bja888 Your seirously going to believe some science/government report. Because we all know they have never lied to us. That link (the has it destroyed the world yet one) made me laugh out loud. This whole thing is just a big waste of money is basically what I was saying. Unless they actually find something applicable out of this.

I mean them being like "Holy crap smashed atoms cure cancer" Instead of "Big bang is still possible. Miller time"

This is not the only reason for the collider. If we discover or give empirical proof of a model maybe if can do more than "LOL BIGBANG!"

It's terrible when people who know squat about science try to talk about science and then argue against people who actually do know a bit about what they're talking about.

I'm pretty sure at least one of you here was arguing some time ago that an aircraft on a conveyor belt couldn't take off.

Didn't something like this happen in Switzerland, except the side effect was a black hole.

this thing IS in switzerland but its in geneva which is right next to france, in fact within CERN is the border between the 2 :P

I went to CERN last year with the physics crowd + saw the LHC + all the other colliders and shit they got there.
it was all pretty cool but I didnt understand it all that much.. i totally failed my physics A-level
but the idea + possibilities of the LHC are pretty exciting

It'll be interesting to hear what they discover from these experiments once they get properly underway later on. But while we're waiting, the 'LHC=Half-Life' meme that's been going around the internet has been a good laugh.
