Couchsurfers
« on: September 19, 2008, 10:52:11 am »
Hey guys,
Quick question: Does anybody use or used couch surfers? http://www.couchsurfing.com
It's a way to travel across the world by staying in peoples places. I thought it's a fun idea to meet maybe.

It seems like a really cool idea. Certainly beats having to sleep at the park.

They don't seem to list the statistics for negative experiences.

Of course it makes a perfect network for rapists and murderers to meet prospective victims.

Nothing could be safer than going to a foreign country to stay in the alleged home of someone you only know on a short term bases via the internet. Do you think when people go missing their hosts get negative feedback on the website?

I've looked into this, honestly. Unfortunately it is based entirely on the honesty and purity of the human souls who populate the service (snrk).

Suffice to say if you ever need a place to crash in the states Michal, I'm sure I can offer you a couch that is free of rape and murder.

I've used couchsurfing several times and met really cool people in places like the Faroe Islands where I wouldn't normally have expected to find anyone who is too friendly of tourism.  Some of my professors are registered on couchsurfing too.  The key is to find somebody with several comments/reviews.

I always thought the search for somewhere to sleep then winding up just parking in a lot and hoping no one calls the cops was funner :D

However I always keep my house open to folks in need. If anyone comes my way just ask for a bed.

Ahh, good times breaking into colleges.

It doesn't seem right that something as makeshift as couchsurfing has become an internet-driven service. The two just don't go together.

No, one guy even gave me a ride to another side of the country and didn't ask for any kind of payment!  But we stopped for lunch and I got the bill for the both of us to make it kind of even...
