Game Discussion: Mirror's Edge

Main Site:

Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror%27s_Edge

Trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLwKMjUxvQQ

When I saw part 1 of the Trailer I thought the concept was rather epic but now that part two is out, it is clear it is going to be another good concept done bad. First of all, I would of left it to a Japanese company to develop this game. They understand motion as art much better then Swedish company DICE. It seems to mix real world physics and fantasy physics. This makes some of the jumps look impossible because the physics get warped as soon as you leave the ground.

The big question though... Is it going to be fun? Maybe worth buying next month?

(I am making a lot of topics today, sorry. Waiting for the guy to get done replacing the light fixture.)

For some reason I've always felt that the new games are slowly becoming a letdown. Don't know why, but these nice graphics make me think that people tend to focus on graphics more than the element of gameplay.

Not to be biased or personal, but I highly doubt it'd be fun. They have a nice concept in the sense that they have a unique "true first-person" system, but I see little storyline (or at least it seems so from the trailer) apart from just being some female called "Faith" who is a runner who acts as a courier by delivering messages. I don't see many elements in the game besides running around and a bit of fighting and it doesn't look interactive.

I question if this futuristic game is meant to be realistic or fictional. Because the physics seem a bit off and feels pretty slow compared to most intense action games (maybe its because of the lighting).

Looks like DICE has already outdone itself here. You two need to get your heads out into the sun, because the parkour in this game is extravagant.

And the storyline? A game based on foot racing, diving from tower to tower and delivering secret packages between businesses in a world controlled by a totalitarian dictatorship? Sounds like the fine beginnings to a storyline to me!

It reminds me of Breakdown, one of my favorite single-player games of last gen. I think Mirror's Edge looks promising.

I have to admit the game does look fun. The graphics are of course excellent but I don't think the game presents much of a challenge.

It's linear and yet the developers felt that they needed to make things glow red in order to help the player know where they're going, from all the footage I've seen it seems like there is only really one route through the game and they've colour-coded it so that idiots don't get lost. It would make more sense to do that if there were multiple routes through the game and they only indicated the most obvious route, allowing people to find other, innovative routes through the game.

They're touting that guns are entirely optional and that you can play through the whole game without firing a shot. - Evidently trying desperately to keep the age rating as low as possible But I hope they are more prominent in the game than what I've seen and that the gun-play isn't massively overlooked.

Am I the only one who would try playing through the game killing everybody with guns?

Oh and the voice acting is absolute bollocks.

From what I heard, that is actually how it is going to be.

I hate it when they have you doing really cool things (running on walls and such) and they make it as easy as pressing a single button and watching it happen on screen. This looks good as long as it isn't super simple controls.

Good example of a game done right is Gran tourismo, you can powerslide through a turn but it takes a lot of practice and driving skill.

Good example of a game done wrong is every console shooter ever with Aim assist, basically admitting the controller is useless for FPS so the computer does it for you.

The Tony Hawk effect?

I'm sure this game is gonna be a big pile of disappointment.
Not to mention the game AI isn't even gonna be a challenge if you can just run up and kick the bad guy without him actually shooting you.

Just looking at screens and a very very short synopsis, it looks to me a lot like tomb raide without the tomb raids, if that makes any sense. (gameplay)

Well I dont know what to expect from it, honestly, but I do think it's a big move from generic shooters.

All I really want from this game (if I end up buying, which I will likely do if I can't get farcry2) so far is to see what happens when you fall off a building and hit the ground :)

First off, great game concept, second, first person eww. Third person wall hopping looks better imo.

First person is more immersive, realistic, and is more of a feat to achieve. You are playing through your own perspective, not the perspective of a floating person stalking the protagonist.

Third person wall hopping.... I guess you're one of those people who plays GunZ: The Duel.

I think I read about this in that one PCG blurb; it was talking about how most games ignored the vertical factor, which is something I totally agree with. However, the only game that I've ever seen really achieve that kind of vertical atmospheric grandeur is ironically WoW, and perhaps it's because of the slightly exaggerated perspective. Mirror's Edge, I think, fails to achieve that goal. It still feels too much like your usual flat FPS game maps, except that the map edge is bordered by like those 'empty space' matte paintings. Things are too clear everywhere so there's little sense of depth -- the artists at DICE are too technical and so the product in the end, well, they have a perfect-looking cadaver on their hands, not a live person, let's just say that. Things are abnormally bright colored and..what's with those lone SWAT guys? It's like some bratwurstization of Portal[changing camera angles]xTF2[bright colors]xAssassin's Creed[yet without the grittiness?].

Looks to me like a one-trick pony made as a response to the smash hit that was Portal. Replayability value is minimal at best.

The hand pumping motions are stupid.

Yea, it gets boring quick though. Im just more of a third person guy. I like to see the player actually doing stuff, it interests me more then seeing a hand grabbing a pipe.

if this game presents a story anywhere near as deep and satisfying as portal I'll buy it immediately.

Wolf man, some loser character is way less interesting than you picking up the pipe.

* bja888 recommends one week ban

I have been thinking about this game a lot today for some reason. I just keeping thinking of ways it would be awesome. I know I am going to be disappointed.

It is ok though, I got Portal 2,  Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead to look forward to!

Yea, real fun story in portal. It be nice of they made the puzzles harder and the more. Plus, the novelty of portals wore off after playing Narbacular Drop. They didn't make it fresh again aside from a few tweaks.

Oh come on now...no one wants to learn a dozen different button combos to run across buildings in Assassin's Creed.  Hold down A, press the stick forward.  It's just like moving normally, except it's a heck of a lot more fun to watch.
