Total inactivity = user deletion?
« on: October 06, 2008, 05:26:56 pm »
If you go to the memberlist and rank people by their number of replies, there are over 80 pages, each displaying 50 members, with 0 postcount. many of those members were created half a year or more ago, and it looks as if though they wont be coming back.
Now, that seems like an immence waste of mamory. I suggest that people with less than 25 posts will have their users deleted after, say, 3 months?

Just a thought..

its not like they produce anything, you might as well let them do nothing.

There are a number of reasons not to delete users for the sake of deleting them:
- If someone googles around and ends up here for any reason and wants to contact a user who may have made a post a long time ago, I don't want their profile to be gone
- Same thing for if someone wants to contact an old and inactive member for any reason
- The amount of memory/storage used for 10,000 user profiles is approximately:

Table         Records   Type     Collation         Size
smf_members   9,225     MyISAM   latin1_swedish_ci 2.3 MiB

very small.

There is absolutely no benefit from deleting these users.  The only accounts I delete are unactivated accounts after 2 months of their registration.

I only agree with this in so far as any waste of mammaries is a horrible waste of mammaries.

Otherwise, I don't see those inactive users posing any threats to SF.

That's so like you to catch that, heh.

I'm fine with Flies deleting accounts that have been unactivated after 2 months they were made. I remember this being discussed on a different forum, and my stand on that back then was "DAILY DELETION OF ACCOUNTS, STARTING WITH *insert forum regular here*", although it doesn't seem unrelated, I believe it kind of applies here.

Should remove the part in the forum rules where it says:
  • Inactive and Pending members will be removed after 55 days.

After registering and writing about 5 posts I was inactive for around a year. Now I'm pretty active :P So I don't like ideaa of deleting users with less then 25 posts. However, I could agree that user who wrote 0 posts, 0 PMs, recieved 0 PMs and didn't log in for a year could be deleted. Just for order's sake.

I don't think deleting inactive members is necessary. Our forums are already fast, and I doubt deleting the inactive members would make it any faster.
