How to Saw.
« on: October 09, 2008, 03:02:46 pm »
As a long-term sawer I've become very fond of this weapon. Not only does it allow you to carve through low-push weapon holders but if mastered even spas-ers are killable. Epic saw duels in which you go all rape mode and kill everyone may occur.

I'm not going to cover saw V projectile as it basically is just speed and momentum.

I'll instead cover a much more intricate thing, Saw V Saw.

Momentum.
There's a new guy trying to figure out the controls and seizuring just over the collider. You put on the hoppin' gas and slam into him with the momentum of an eighteen wheeler, splattering his entrails all over the ground.

Momentum goes hand in hand with speed. The theory is that if you're going faster than they are you're pretty well impossible to beat. This can be accomplished by rapidly hopping right when you touch the ground (DO NOT hold down the hop button; Hold the directional key where you want to go and tap the up button just as you hit the ground), supermanning (This will be covered in Position), skating (laying prone and tapping the directional button rapidly on an ice polygon), or uphill surfing. This is where on a somewhat steep incline, like those on the mid level of CTF_Cobra, you rapidly hold the right or left button and tap the up button like crazy. But those are mainly speed maneuvers, there's more to momentum than that. Midair directional changes can save your ass in a duel. For example, you hop to avoid someone carving through your pelvis, but oh woe they have the low ground and hop directly at you. You slam the right key and they go flying into the ground, proned, with no time to retaliate. Slice till your heart's content.

Position
A notorious 0 pinger is warping his balls off and slaughtering your team. He spots you.
You quickly place yourself behind a collider with your saw sticking out and he's impaled and exploded as he supermans into it.

Some argue this to be the most important part of sawing. I'd have to agree, really.

Positioning is where you position yourself in such a way that the enemy simply has no chance of killing you. For example, on a head-on charge, it's down to who has more speed.. Unless. You prone and jet into him (called a superman) and his knees implode as he's turned into mincemeat. Why?

Because you proned(laid down), he had no time to aim his saw that low and you were able to saw his legs/pelvis/feet. This is one of the most essential skills in sawing.

Positioning can also be intertwined with momentum, mainly in midair stunts. A change of direction can render your opponent helpless.

For example.. Soldatten 1 is chasing soldatten 2 full-speed and gaining, Not an advantageous place for soldatten 2. Anyways, Mr. 2 flips backwards and applies hard counterforce and then pronejets directly into the back of Mr. 1's head.

Why?
In the time it takes to backflip, Mr. 1 had no time to react entirely, he just BEGAN to react. He stopped, giving Mr.2 a clean shot at giving him a nice bit off the top.

Another example would be the same scenario (a chase) except Mr.2 prones and saws, destroying Mr.1's legs as he passes over him.

Why?
Since Mr.1 was going so fast he had no time to slow down to avoid having his legs gnashed off.

Generally, it is SAFER to be below your opponent because you have the ground to jump from, whereas your opponent cannot jump on air. However, at high skill duels gravity boosting can become useful.

PING

If you have zero ping in a sawing server, life will be a whole lot easier for you.

I've seen 5 expert sawers diving onto a 0 pinger who was sitting still (coughcoughDuckcoughcough) and the 0 pinger won.

Low ping is such a horrendous advantage in sawwing it's not even funny.

So right. Saw well and prosper. And if you see Lumenshroom, run the other way.

I pretty much learned all of these facts via experience. These tips are for people first learning to duel with a saw. The best way to become and expert is through practice. Eventually people get the feel for it and some of them even have their own style.

Just a simple idea, move fast, and prone, and he dies.

Other one is that take cover on the lower ground of your enemy, then prone at the corner, then he dies. It's risky to do that if you're on the higher place, because they have the same range then. And you're not moving, so simply, you're dead.

One important topic that you forgot to mention: The Spaz is powerful enough to keep a saw wielder knocked back at such a great distance that he has no chance to close in on the enemy. This would be a good time to switch to a primary.

Otherwise a good saw guide. This is perhaps my favorite weapon.

Pretty basic stuff, but it apperently needs to be said. It's amazing how many people just kamirush you without attempting to dodge/be erratic or anything. Good guide, but IMO knife>saw.

Something I've noticed: On maps with big bunkers (By this I mean Trenchwars), rushers will often backflip into the side of the building above the entrance instead of just running in. This is an attempt to fool anyone waiting inside with a law pointed at the door into wasting their shot. If you have a saw, you can wait for someone to do this, then simply stand at the door. When they fall down, they're just on the other side of the door and you can slice them open without stepping outside.

Why do people think that saw is an art...

Really saw is close to useless any good knifer, lawer or EVEN a good soccom user can OWN  a sawer easily.

Why...simple NADES and push back from bullets...Really is just SO easy to kill a sawer by not been stupid and try to RUSH someone with saw...just act smart and trick the guy and fire ad the torso to stop him or even better....NADE HIS ASS simple as it is.

This type of topics should stop saw is not a PRO weapons.

Some like it Mallow007, and you gotta admit it's a fun weapon to use.  Ever tried it?  No, not just running, but doing the movements perfectly... in pubs, you will see how many people fall for it.  Especially in CTF situations when people run at each other... if you're fast enough they only manage to realise you're there by the time you're like 3 sawlengths away.

Sawing is really fun, plain and simple. Especially with Alpha infiltration. Plus its the perfect weapon for the on-the-go flagger.

Actually, Saw is underpowered, IF you're going to tell me everyone's just gonna charge head on and if everyone dies too quickly. But the thing is, it's all about speed and agility - and tactics/psychology. Which true saw-user wouldn't move so swiftly that they catch their enemies off-guard and before they can even react, they're dead? Wouldn't you agree that the saw is quite an intimidating sight? Everyone who sees a saw is like: "Oh crap that little blade over there better not touch me or I'll die!" then start panicking or whatever. Also, what if you are a sawer yourself? Same concept. That's what makes the saw such a great weapon. And REALLY fun - you can really feel the speed and the reactions of the players when they get sawed or see you running towards them.

I just see how my climb and agility are progressing when I saw :P
But do learn to saw - it's not only fun, but useful in countering sawers.  You know their mindset, you know their moves, you know what they need to do, what they want to do, their path, motion etc.  Often, I withdraw slowly until the saw gets overconfident, then a simple jump puts them off.

I remember the days of p0ppin fresh, he was immortal in SAW-ONLY servers. Multi-Kills left and right, and people could barely touch him. He was a killing machine, with all the saw techniques ingrained within his every move. Fast, precise, and most importantly, unwavering at the very face of death.  :-X

Domino was his protege, if I'm not wrong. That guy is one hell of a SAWER as well.  ;D

Why do people think that saw is an art...
it's called humiliation. Like when players spawn camp with saw, they'll enjoy the whining player's agony.

The saw is truly awesome and satisfying to use if you manage to kill someone. Except I find it most useful in publics since in gathers the players are already VERY aware of the dangers of the saw and try to pick you off from afar.
And automatic weapons are very effective against a chainsaw guy.
