American Stereotype
« on: October 09, 2008, 09:12:24 pm »
This is not a flame or spam thread, I have a real question. If you turn this into a flame and spam thread, butts will be liberally kicked.

What exactly is the stereotype for Americans in TV shows that aren't Americans. For example, I was watching That 70s Show (I know it's old) and there was this British dude. And he was all proper and a little elitist and stuff, very average British stereotype. The Russian guy is usually a little bit crazy, etc. They aren't necessarily true, but it is fact that this is how they are portrayed on TV/Movies. So how do the stereotypical Americans act in your TV/movies? Lazy, stupid, what? I really honestly want to know.

I never minded, as long as it was funny, it was alright for me. BUT if it actually offends people bad, then I would actually get mad.

Stereotypical shows are on everywhere Killroy, not only America, everywhere else. And who knows, all the others will think of us as something else.

Basic sitcom premise:

- Wife is a bitch (but hot)
- Husband is a retard and fat
- Kids (optional): Son is a pervert, Daughter is a drama queen
- Wacky neighbor

and you have yourself a show

Well I think lots of American stereotypes enjoy Fox shows.

It's related to alot of shows. But that is an excellent example.

female dog (but hot)

It was about 5 minutes before I realized how bad that sounded.

who makes movies outside hollywood? anyone?

besides the rather recent fat idiot stereotype. Aren't we portrayed as crazed super patriotic elitists?

They can have their laugh, deep down they know we're all rich and when world war 3 breaks out we will come out of nowhere and kick some serious ass.

Let me paint you a picture. My stereotypical American:

- Doesn't watch comedies that don't have cued audience laughter because they 'aren't funny'.
- Is thoroughly entertained by shows like Jerry Springer and Maury. Whilst being entirely unaware that the very same issues plague their own life.
- Spends more time per week eating than walking.
- Is completely unaware that all the news networks use Red, White and Blue in their studios and on-screen information.
- Not only thinks that America won Vietnam, but thinks Vietnam started it.
- Cannot correctly pronounce Aluminium.
- Doesn't feel the need to keep healthy because 'everything will be fine in heaven'.

Classic crazed super patriotic elitists?

Perhaps....the Rambo movies, Shooter, and most army-themed action movies?

For now, I'm just enjoying the fat idiot stereotype that I see a lot in real life nowadays.

EDIT: Mangled's stereotype is exactly what I have in mind.

Little Britain has recently started a new spin-off based in America: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL985L_A0t8 which as you'd expect, has lot of american stereotypes (though like the British characters, are sometimes very warped).

They can have their laugh, deep down they know we're all rich and when world war 3 breaks out we will come out of nowhere and kick some serious ass.

Ya, come out of nowhere after 3/4 of the war has already been fought. :P

Why does mangled have to come into a thread, read the title, and comment.

I was mostly asking about Americans in non-American TV. I mean many shows on US TV have the designated foreigner of some type, and I was just wondering what that person usually acts like.

From what I've seen from the Little Britain USA Episodes, the American stereotypes they have are how they keep saying "lover" meaning "gay", the gun nuts and fat people. Edit: Ah, the swear filter even censors it out. Well it's that other word for cigarette....

"There are more fat people in America than there are people"

"I thought you would've all wanted to see one of my own guns; I've got a small personal collection of..2000 guns...."

And on Top Gear, they say that American Cars can't handle corners well, and the dashboards are normally very crude, even in the expensive ones.

"American cars normally have fairly cheap looking dashboards, and in this Cadillac...it's business as usual. It just feels as if they've cut a wheelie-bin in half"

Just because a joke is incredibly racist and offensive to others, doesen't mean it can't be funny to you.

If there was one spelling of the element that would be correct.  Unfortunately for you, there are two.
