Maps: alpha or bravo?
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:36:30 pm »
I need your help, I'm trying to figure out if alpha or bravo is the best choice on the default ctf maps.

If you think that it doesn't matter at all Im not interrested in your answer.(on some maps it may be true though)

Please take your time and think it through before you answer. And a reason if you can.

PS: you should maybe have more experience then public to answer  :P

dont ask for the sides of mirrored maps, cobra, death 2, dropdown2, equinox, lanubya, maya, maya2, ruins, snakebite, steel and voland are mirrored, so no need for these, the side doesn't matters at all.

One of the reasons they are default maps is because they are equally fair for both teams to play, so the above maps can't really be given a 'better team' choice.

To be awfully statistic and linear, if realistic mode would be of interest to you, check out the statistics recorded from #soldat.realistic. Can't really give any real on-topic replies beyond that, seeing as I very seldom play Soldat on a highly competitive level outside of gathers, so the process of picking maps according to what side one will play on has never really applied to me.

SCTFL 12 Map stats:

SCTFL 11 Map stats:

The difference you see in symmetric maps is a combination of randomness and the fact that most clans prefer (And actually play very slightly better) when rushing towards the right from the left rather than the other way around.

Equinox is definitely better for bravo, because they got a bush in the middle that snipers can camp when the Alphas are rushing towards the middle.

I've had more success on Nuubia as Bravo myself, then I have on Alpha, but that's just me really.

Movement speed seems to be better for Alpha team on b2b.

But really, if you want to play at your best, figure out which direction you are the fastest at moving on, since the alpha/bravo spawns isn't always the same on some maps; Alpha: left side, Bravo: right side ; Alpha: right side, Bravo: left side.

Those are stats from SCTFL, unless you are actually asking "Why dont we have stats like that in asctfl".

Looks like alpha's side has a slightly more wins on  most of the maps. But I like to play in bravo...I have no idea why :p

I don't find any difference in Lanubya Homer, but for Nuubia, I would go with Alpha (they're on right side, right?), because when you go up high, the big chunk of land above is closer to Bravo, so they would have a little hard time to go up. And Alphas can also just camp on low, because it's a plain straight road to get the flag.

I choose the team depending on if it fits with my current pants/hair color tbh.

Well, as Poop mentioned, it seems more determined by the side of the map that you're on rather than the color. From the combined SCTFL11+SCTFL12 seasons, only three maps (DD2, Steel, and Viet) out of the 19 total had more wins coming from the right side of the map as opposed to the left. Now the advantage that side conveys is obviously relative to each person, but it does suggest that overall most people perform slightly better attacking from the left to the right. The difference that this makes, however, is probably very small, and I very much doubt that side (especially on symmetrical maps) would play much role in determining the victor between most clans. I imagine that there is a bit more room to argue its pertinence regarding clans that are very even in terms of skill though.

Same. I wouldn't be Blue if I was on alpha. Losing side or not, Bravo's my favorite. \o/

How about kampf? The map seems unbalanced, but I never really knew if it was more advantageous to play on alpha or bravo.

What do you guys think?
