Joining full servers as spectator
« on: October 14, 2008, 04:06:22 pm »
Hello world, is there a good reason we cant join full servers as spectators?
I mostly play 1 on 1 DM-s so watching fights would be cool and would also give a thrill to players who fight.

Peace, Fale.

The problem is, say, 6v6 CTF games with 10 spectators. Which is a lot of people, creating lag. Maybe making an option to set slots specifically for spectators only. Say, 10 player CTF server with 2 spectator slots. Just a thought.

well when the server starts with var maxplayers set to x, its only prepared to hand out x player ids to handle. It would be cool to have var maxSpectators too.

wouldn't create lag. just make the server bussier (band width).

F12 really good idea. I'm sure it can be done. There shouldn't be any reason why this should not be done, as long as it is optional how many specs you want.

Explanation please? Too complicated?
If servers with 20 people doesn't lag, why would setting some extra slots be a problem? :/
Setting spectator slots would we the server owners choice...

I would be more focused on game if somebody's watching the game - thats in human nature :P.
There are many other reasons - you can learn something from skilled players playing - especially if you mostly play duels like I do. I have some favourite servers and i know many people playing there so if i could spec while its full i could of organise another match. Im not sure, i heard clicking on the server while its full makes lagg. maybe people wouldnt be trying to join a hundreed times if they knew there are two people waiting before him. Many reasons i guees.

Maybe have the game 6 v 6, and have 2 Spectator Spots strictly to Spectating only...so it wouldn't create that much lag. Because some people just spectate for a long time where another person could play where it says in the server list: 13/12 Players, So they know there is one person spectating...although this could be annoying because it could stop other people from joining and playing in the server if there are more people in the actual server.

where would be two groups, one are spectotors and the other one players so server would show 5/6 even if there are 5 people playing and 2 are spectationg

so your saying there is a spectator only place? The maybe when you request for servers it shows:
Map - Ctf_Ash - Players 12/12 (2/2) <--- This could be the spectating server slot, and it shows how many players are actually spectating at the time.

Yeah, could be  :). I dont know how much time the coding take for such an update, also dont know why it shouldnt be released. Of course it could be set in soldat.ini.

Ok, say you have a 10 slot server with 2 slots for spectators.

In a 3v3 war, you'd have 6 slots for spectators, so just go for a 12 slot server anyway.
In a public server, you have 2 slots going to waste, so either make it a 12 slot, or remove the 2 spectator slots.

In other words, within those two common uses for a server, this idea is pretty bloody useless. No server owner would use this.

On the other hand, something along the lines of "SoldatTV" would be nice, but with a bit of work making a fan app, I think it is currently possible anyway.

I think that the problem comes when you rent the server, if you pay for 6 slots, per example, you can't have 7 people in the server, so if you would like to add this feature you should pay for spectator-only slots, which would be unused if there are no spectators.

(I guess)
