Sprint move.
« on: October 24, 2008, 03:01:24 am »
Hey yalls I'm back...

I suggested this a while back (over a year?) and was wondering what ppl think today:
I think a wonderful addition to the game would be a sprint move:  when the sprint button is pressed, the character makes a fast move forward (faster than a bunny hop) as soon as the button is pressed.  After the player does the sprint move, he can't move for a (really) short time (.4 seconds?).
If you don't understand, it's like the sprint move in the game Gunz or in starwars.
It doesn't make you faster (sprint + break = same as normal).  It's good for when you know you're about to get hit or need a quick last-second dodge move.
This will balance one-hit-kills

Optionally, if doing the sprint-move into someone while holding knife, it's like a stab and/or if no weapon is in hands it's like a punch (+ disarm).
Can't think of anything original to put here...

Yeah, when I read the title I thought "someone suggested it before" :)
But then why not revive that thread? Or do you want this idea have a new start maybe?

Nevertheless, I must say F11. It will complicate Soldat and I don't see enough benefits from it for such a complication.
And personally I don't like games with a lot of special movements, combos etc.

PS can you add a poll please?

Would any lag issues arise?  With all that fast movement and all that...

I read the previous thread, and I know youre talking about ground movement, but i thought id attack it from another angle.

Ive often thought that a game where you had a jetpack at your disposal should have some kind of 'burst' feature, instead of just simple levity. But at the same time, this makes Soldat what it is.

The way i picture burst, you press a modifier, jet and a direction, and you consume a massive chunk of jetfuel at once, but you get a massive [linear] velocity boost.
I think this ability would drastically change the way we play things, and open new exploits. Sure it woud be a blast, but its not Soldat anymore.

Tthe idea on the ground could really be interesting in combat, but on the other hand I think it  becomes redundant. You can quickly evade something at the cost of not being able to shoot and becoming a sitting duck for half a sec thereafter. You dodged the m79, but died from the impending nade.

Sounds like a nice idea. But instead of having the chracter freeze in the spot once he uses it for a period of time, it would be better if you just could not use the sprint feature for like a period of time, or until your next death in game, etc.

I gotta agree here. There just aren't enough benefits to yet another button that really would only offer a minimal advantage.

GunZ? Then it's not called a sprint, it's called a dash.

I think its redundant. First of all, if its a ground move, there's always a backflip or rolling. Also, eventually people will also adjust their one-hitters to shoot where you may dash towards like how good Barrett-users adjust their aim when they think you're going to backflip. And have you forgotten about grenades being thrown at your face?

So its a F11.

Bunnyhopping, problem solved. A sprint wouldn't work because many maps' polygons aren't aligned correctly, so trying to sprint over them, let alone walk, causes your player to slow down, if anything. Bunnyhopping is a great solution to this, since you can just jump over the bits that are jutting out. :D

Nah, no need. People can evade attacks with backflips and/or rolling, etc right now. It will make Soldat look like GunZ, like STM said.

We want to improve Soldat in a way without changing its original 'taste'. This is what most older forum members think.

zyxstand has been here longer before you, DS, sure there are rolls or backflipping but rolls aren't really fast, and you need to learn how to do a correct backflip for what you want to do, i think this move should be for newbie players and more experienced players should do a backflip because there is no limitation, they way you guys are looking at it, why was backflip even implemented? or roll? or why was crouch even neccesary? each move has its own distinct "job" to do, and one can say a roll doesn't offer enough benefits, what, when your about to head off a cliff your roll to gain more momemtem, or in some cases a little doding manueverment, what does that really do? so i say F12 maybe press the direction you wanna do twice so that it doesn't seem like another button, dd aa

f11..If you know how to move you can already do this by hitting poly corners at the right speed+angle. And doing that their is a chance/skill element involved, whereas this only add's something that I think would be annoying as hell.

No.
Almost all of soldat takes place in midair, due mostly to what SpiltCoffee outlined. Why add another control that nobody would actually use?

I know, but I figured that zxystand never intended it as a midair technique. However, if it was a midair technique, thats how Id imagine it would function, and fail.

F11, I don't like it. It will ruin the gameplay.
