Time next to the message
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:58:55 am »
I just had an idea... how about doing [MM:SS] [NICK] [TEXT] format of the chat? doesn't have to be hours minutes and seconds because that would mess up the chat too much, but minutes and seconds could be cool. Like in mirc, you know. It would help alot.

And, like IRC, it should be an option.

I don't find the feature useful if it is meant to be used ingame, because in the end, when playing Soldat, it all comes down to two situations:

1. Everyone talks a lot, participates actively while playing.
2. Almost no one talks and simply play.

Soldat's chat system (except in the Lobby, which is when this suggestion will be useful or already implemented) doesn't show you what you've said from LONG LONG time ago until now. It shows up to a certain number of lines, including ingame messages like "Major has joined the game" "Major has captured the flag" etc. If everyone talks actively, sooner or later the chat from just a couple of minutes ago will quickly be gone. If not, if hardly anyone talks, eventually the message is also gone due to those ingame messages.

The current chat system is good enough. Time is gonna be redundant, especially when in 1.5 you're gonna see a ingame clock.

F11.

Imo this is not useless. I remember I had at least several times wondered whether "EFC up!" message is about current EFC, or about previous one.

F12 I like this idea but is this how you wanted the layout and format of it?

If youre not paying enough attention to notice that the same text has been onscreen for a while, and hasnt changed between caps, what makes you think you can pay attention to the time as well? F11

You make no sense, the time tells you that it has been already typed.

[7:22] [Scarface09] [EFC Escaping High!]
[7:55] [Scarface09] [Get him!]
[8:15] [Scarface09] [Com'on guys!]
[8:22] Bravo Team Scores!
[8:36] [Scarface09] [See! Now he scored...>.>]
[10:22] [Scarface09] [Why am I the only one talking?]
[11:22] [Scarface09] [ns]

Here, even though you weren't ever looking at the console till now, you can clearly see that he said that at 7:22 but now it is 11:22 so, by now he probably already scored.

¬_¬

The fact you can read text on the screen tells you it has already been typed. The fact that youre paying attention, that it says EFC directly above Flag Capped/Returned, tells you what you need to know.

Im saying if you couldnt keep track of whats going on as it is, now you need to keep track of the time as a reference. It doesnt matter what timestamp is printed, I still need to know the time in order to make any use of the stamp.

If your not paying enough attention in the first place, why add something else to pay attention to.

Because you don't need to pay attention to it! Anyone who completed 1st grade ATLEAST knows that 10 is after 6 and 11 is after 7 >.> you know it almost instantly, except that split second it takes the nuerons in your brain to go to where it needs to go.

I can absolutely agree with you if you are only 5 years old, and don't know your numbers.

And I see that you can see that the flag has been capped / returned but...there has to be something i'm missing...

Not necessary, pay more attention as KYnetiK said.

He has a good point.  I don't always play in window mode, so I can't always see the clock.  If you don't know what time it is, how do you know which text is new?  If you couldn't see the clock, then the most recent text (and time stamp) could still be old even if there is a time stamp on it.

Let's not get in to any flaming about not knowing how to count here, either.  If someone doesn't pay enough attention to the text in the first place, that's their own fault.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is

You could just use the little computer time feature coming in 1.5(?) to see which messages are new, if that's your only problem. :s

I kinds likes this idea. This way, we can actually expect where the efc is. And I sometimes miss the sign, so this can a ctually be useful to me.

I'd like an explanation on how this idea will make it ANY easier for someone to expect where the EFC is.

And as for the overall idea, I could care less about it. As long as there aren't any square brackets around the text itself, and the length of accepted text isn't changed (before it shrinks to fit), then I don't see why it matters.

Could we put up a poll for this?? And also It the format should be like this:

[7:22] [Scarface09]: EFC Escaping High!]
[7:55] [Scarface09]: Get him!]
[8:15] [Scarface09]: Com'on guys!]
[8:22] Bravo Team Scores!
[8:36] [Scarface09]: See! Now he scored...>.>
[10:22] [Scarface09]: Why am I the only one talking?
[11:22] [Scarface09]: ns

Instead of [ of the start and end of the text. You should have : only at the end.

Wait, so should it end with a ']' or not?

If this is implemented it should be fully customizable. There should be a thing in soldat.ini that lets you input how you want it formatted (The time).
Name and text should be how they are now.
