physics objects
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:53:02 pm »
Is it possible to have phys_objects in soldat?
I think i have seen some instances where grenade crates or med crates have been shuffled around from gun fire.

And do not forget the flags that can be shot out of place.

Just thought it would be kool to be able to turn BSP objects (crates, berrels etc etc) into phys props. So you could blow s crate in the air and if it is traveling fast enough and hit some one... wel... let's just say, lights out.

I'm on the fence with this one. Physics are extremely fun to see in games, Soldat is no exception, but having the crates damage you if they fly fast enough? Eh...

This is Soldat not Havok.

Havok is an engine not a game, genius. Havok would make soldat pretty fun though.

Nobody can deny that physics objects would be extremely fun in soldat just like Garry's mod.  Building stuff is the ultimate cooolity in this kinda game.  How hard could it be to build a 2D physics engine compared to a 3D one like HL2...
Can't think of anything original to put here...

A physics engine in 2D or 3D is hard to implement. :-\ Try playing the game linked in my sig, it has a ragdoll engine. ;)

I know Havok is an engine. Physics programming is hard. And Soldat is not built for it.

physics is really hard to implant when the game isn't made for it at the start

Heh, maybe we could have scriptable weapons, and make Gravity Guns. (I'm serious!)

Anyways, I'm all for this. And the boxes already have pretty good physics, so I doubt it would be very hard to code something else.

I realize that since the game has already come so far it'll be extremely hard to implement a physics engine...  however i WAS speaking in relative terms saying that a 2D physics engine IS EASIER THAN a 3D phyics engine.  and i played the N game alraedy*

yeah, its slightly easier as you dont have to code a third plane of object movement, but as people have said previoudly in this topic, to hard to implement into a game that isnt meant for physics in the start

I believe your right. It's a shame, really, 'cause I think it would make soldat come out alot more brutal and action packed, and we all love those little sequences where there's blood everywhere, right? Maybe you could add a few things like dirt blowing up when a grenade is on the ground. The screen shaking as you get fired upon, or a nade/m79 shell explodes near you. Things like that.

I'm not sure if it's any hard modding it into soldat, but I think it would give it a neat touch.

I've never done any graphics programming myself, so I can't speak definitively about it.  However, I really like the screen shake idea (they had it in Tank Liero, IIRC), and I don't think it would be too hard to implement.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

I can only imagine how pissed off I would be if out of nowhere a medkit smacked me in the head and killed me instead of healing...

The screen already shakes for clusters, and the screen shake after being shot is just too much. you get shot so much already in this game that it would just come out to which guy with which gun can have the most deadly spray.

I suggested this a while ago. ;)

I'd like this to be implemented, it'd be cool.

And it wouldn't take much coding. It'd just be a permanent corpse piece with a different collide noise and new graphics.

Dirt: Already happens. Look closely.
Screen Shake: Happens with explosions and heavy gunfire. Just start a 30p botmatch on arena2, and you'll see what I mean.
