I assume it has to do with "Error: not enough waffles" that occasionally appears from time to time.

It was a forum game from several months ago. A quest for a missing case of waffles with clues being found in the news header at the top of the page, people's profiles, and several images.

No. The entire thing was solved and most of the clues have disappeared.

This thread pointed people towards the initial clue and helped them solve the mystery (look at the news header in that thread and click on ":error:" to see one of the clues).
