Old Veterans
« on: June 10, 2006, 05:17:05 am »
More like a sad moment than happy.

I stopped playing for a long period of time. Around four to five months, heh, not that long. But when I started playing today, I saw servers filled with n00bs.

Yes. I don't know what happened in the time I was gone, but it seems like there has been an exponential increase in n00bs. Every server I go to, it's full of name calling, principle lacking, naive n00bs.

Every time I killed someone, a bunch of others would yell at me and say stuff like:

"Omg, haxX0rz!1!! Ban j00"

or

"How did you get so good?"

I am not a good soldat player. I mean, I do follow common sense rules, like covering fire and picking up flags, or knife throwing, but no, i do not consider myself as good, as it is a title reserve for the better players.

Worst of all, the veterans are gone. Every soldat player I have known has mysteriously gone AWOL. The n00bs know nothing about these 'legendary' players and instead try to hog all the spotlight.

Another thing is that these n00bs think that clans are 'OMG PWNING COOL'. IMHO, clans are a waste of time. But that's my opinion. Anyway, the clans in my region seem to be getting desperate to enlist n00bs.

The servers are being overrun! Retreat to our 1337 fortress!

Nah, nothing as mediocre as that. The most that the old pre 1.3.1 players is just play as well as we can, and avoid talking, in hopes of a less than brutal rebuttal by the n00bs that inhabit our servers.

So no, this is not a moment. This is an opinion of how servers are degrading, overrun by t3h m1ng3b4gs (hl2 n00bs)

Jap you are rigth, i had the same problem yesterday, and i think i am far worse than you, i played with my mate, at the end of the first round i had 30 kills and 2 death, on the next round i was kiked after the first 2 kills because the thougth i was cheating or hacking. Thats realy bad, a long tima ago i played on server's with players wich where as good or far better than me and i said to my self, thats much more fun to play becuase you cannot win every time, i think those noobs should probably remember that there are better players in this world.

sorry for that bad english :-) i am from germany and cant speak or write english as well as you guys

Hehe I kinda stopped playing soldat for like 6+months ago :o however you can never STOP playing soldat ^^ so I started playing a few hours a week/month again, just for kicks. And I mean, I "grew" up with the barret so I basicly never used any other guns, I dont like it no more with the delay and insane bink, so I changed to a auto, or spas... I still dominate at n00b servers.. Its really sad, I know that I stink ^^ wich I see each time I play a gather :D but the majority of soldat players are horribly bad.. Back in the old days there were allways some skilled rookies on the servers.. now its just sad imo.

Also, clans are not a waste of time ! If you join a clan with nice ppl clans rule :) you make really good Soldat friends ^^

Sorry for "chunk" >_<

There are still good players out there. Most of the |*UoW*| clan players are very good. Usually when i go to a server there is one good player and the rest are alright or n00bzorzismlolzorz.

Clans are good. If you know other good clans everytime you play in a match you are garunteed to at least have a good match.

For me it isnt the noobs who get on my nerves its the constant constant whiners. The people that go "OMG DUDE STOP SPRAYING" or "LOL YOU NOOB BARRET IS NOOB". I hate these people so goddamn much.

And also the arrogant idiots. The ones that go "owned" every single time they kill someone. As if they think they are a god.

I tend to find less noobs on realistic servers, But are right in that they're increasing.

I've only been playing since mid 1.2.1, but I think I know what you mean. I met a lot of great people in my time at ~/SM\~.
I change my ingame name constantly. Look out for my colour scheme, it's the only way you'll recognize me.

Or I could just keep a list...

An increase of noobs is a good sign that Soldat is expanding?

Why dont many people support the idea of a growing Soldat community?

Afraid not. You're thinking of newbs. Noobs will never change, no matter how hard they try, while newbs, such as you or me when we first started out, will grow to become (semi)-respected members of the community.

Veteran has no sense. A veteran is a person who had known a time which is dead. Vietnam war is closed, so exist veterans of this war.
Anyway Soldat is already in life, so it does'nt exist Veterans.

Thank you Messie for pointing that out. We'll just refer to guys who have played this game for around 3 years as 'Old Drunken Archeologic Pieces of History' from now on, because Veterans do not exist.

Anyway, the pub-game oldies change from time to time: however, the lot of IRC vets have never went away. You'll find them in the appropriate channels, as always.

Yep, I myself dont really know veterans... I dont think there ever where. Maybe they just make them look cool in those soldat videos playing against noobs...

But I think every good soldat player remembers how they started and how they are now, its pretty cool.
Cuz I used to be an m79 noob, and I rocked 1st place at every single server but then I started getting into clans and stuff and man did I suck xD

I used to play in public servers all the time. I guess I got used to the atmosphere there. Once I joined a clan, I realized how much pubs suck in terms of team work and skill, and I haven't looked back since. I know how you feel about clans, as I used to feel the same way, but I really suggest finding one that you like and trying to join. You'll have a completely new outlook on Soldat assuming you find the right clan. Sure, you'll find idiots in other clans as well; that cannot be helped. But for the most part, you should have a much better experience than what you're having right now.

As another alternative, try joining IRC to organize games. As Demonic pointed out, a lot of vets still hang around there, and you'll find several channels dedicated to setting up clean, "anti-noob" games. If you need help connecting to IRC, a good tutorial can be found here: http://wiki.soldat.nl/IRC_tutorial

Yeah, RS isn't as filled with those kind of noobs (most of the time) and it helps to be admin in the server :P
Also, find some passes for some private servers, those guys are cool.

Would you like to make a little list of some "legendary" players?

As long as 'noobs' keep playing the game, they are still 'newbs' and will eventually become good at the game - given they stick at it
