If you want to remove the white from the original image, just open GIMP, select Colors > Color to alpha > [select white, which should be the default anyway] and the white background is gone, you'll have the image full sized still, anti-alias and all.make sure you use the magic wand (on a high threshold) to select all the white bits though, otherwise the gray on the crosshair will go transparent aswell, unless you want it like that
