Another Project I Did For Web Design
« on: December 19, 2008, 08:18:33 am »
This one had to be a simple site about my Christmas activities, food, gifts, etc. I decided to make it as pretty as possible and as I usually do in her class, layer background images. (everyone else was stuck with using DW4 with tables and crap)

http://www.jrgp.org/christmas_08/index.html

Good? Bad? Comments?

You have the skills but you don't seem to 'try' - if that makes any sense.

Don't get me wrong... what you've done there is probably going to be better than anyone elses. But you aren't applying your skills to make your work better, this work is average of you and yet you have the potential to improve, you should push further than sheerly meeting the brief.

Ask yourself this: If you were a CEO of a very successful company and you wanted to hire a web designer and you were shown this website as a portfolio... would you hire you?

Of course they wouldn't, I only make sites like these to show off to everyone in my class and earn respect (which I have).

Judging by the website in relation with your hard earned respect... low standards. Like, abyssmal.

You know, people who show off don't get respect, they get b!tched about the minute they leave the room. Joe, the class stud because he makes the best websites.

By the way what did you use to make it? You mention they were using Dreamweaver, "using tables and crap".

I decided to make it as pretty as possible and as I usually do in her class

This suddenly jumped out at me. "Her"?

To be fair, when students who are jrgp's age are told to make a "simple site," they're expected to make one web page with a two-color scheme, possibly a couple tables, and a demonstration of the ability to manipulate font.

In this sense, you definitely outdid yourself, I would say. I do agree with Mangled that your skill and experience in the field allows you to create sites much, much more appealing than this, but the effort required for that honestly isn't worth it if this will get you full credit (or more).

But yeah, nobody likes people who show off all the time. ;P Sure, producing superfluous work like this is more than fine, but don't be all "HEY LOOK WHAT I DID GUYS!"

You might want to fix the "raditions" typo on the first page.

Well, that's the thing: I don't blurt out "Hey peers! My site's better than anything you'll ever create!!" The other kids know that I'm good and ask me for help whenever they need any and I always help them out to the best of my ability. They don't hate me or think I'm a jerk, they just treat me like a nice guy.

I used the code view part of dreamweaver and did all the html and css by hand. For the images I used Adobe Fireworks CS3

I don't really care about the typos I make in her class since she only grades us on whether or not we have a functional site with the correct amount of content.

I really don't want to sound arrogant, but the only effort this site took was making the gfx image effects. The html/css part was a breeze since I've been doing this kind of stuff since I was 11 (2004).

Exactly, haha. If you can get full credit using minimal effort, there's really not much of a reason to go well beyond that. That's always been my approach to schoolwork.

I'd suggest some art classes just so that color schemes and composition becomes intuition. I mean, pure technical skill is acceptable, but nowadays people generally ask for more [like why some people are buying Macs over PCs simply because they choose 'style' over utilitarianism].

I'm probably going to take a Web Design class next year because the teacher of all the computer classes likes me. Your site doesn't look bad, but doesn't look spectacular, but it looks like that was kind of the idea. Way better than anything I could do at the very least.

As soon as I clicked the link, my eyes were assaulted by your choice of colors.  I know red and green are Christmas colors, but MAN.  That hurt.  Something more wintery and less Christmasy might have been better, like white on dark blue (sort of a snow falling in the evening scheme).

Also, distorting the images as you did really doesn't help anything, IMO.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

Again, this is not the kind of layout I'd ever use seriously, I merely created it to look cool to certain kinds of people.

Yeah, I just BS'd my way through the text as fast as I could, making most of it slightly humorous filler crap. The entire thing is littered with typos.

I've got to agree with Espadon. You have the technical skills to make a nice website, but you need some artsy skills to go along with it.

You also always use the same style of website. Why not do something different some time?

Although it is made with div's it has completly boring, table-looking view... Man! You shouldn't think that the website is still table... Make something original, without crappy table structure

plus is that it has passed w3c validation :)

I learned a long time ago to stop trying to design my own websites because while I may have the technical skills to code a site, I don't have the artsy capacity to design something that looks decent.  Most sites that I make from the ground-up tend to end up being blah, even if they may work just fine.

All the labels, the decoration, seriously, everything, they are beautiful. And I never knew that you could make snow out of sprinklers!!! XD

But seriously, you got a potential jrgp. I think if you can push yourself more and more, you'll probably be successful in many ways.

fucking hell i'm hungry now :(

I like your site

I did a HTML document in school, I made a marquee text saying Metallica Rules in stencil writing against a pink background :(   I think you're a bit more advanced than I am in this area :P

nice site overall, very clean and all, but I don't exactly like the red and green image editing, maybe make it more subtle
