whenever im playing and anyone else notices that im rolling they all start hating me for it

some go so far as to patrol my area of the map in an effort to catch me driving around with drugs or my gun on me

so in answer to your question, no

Rolling decreases your speed greatly, so when you want to go down a slope, you can roll skillfully and go down without losing time. I do that every time I have to go down a platform completely vertically. I also roll when I take a weapon of the ground... maybe it's just me.

Only time I ever roll is when I'm jumping down from a great distance; I start rolling as soon as I hit the ground and after that sprint across the ground. It helps when you're maneuvering around corners whilst dodging bullets.

I roll when somebody is shooting me from near vertically above in order to dodge their shots. You could do the same jumping back and forth I guess, but rolling looks cooler.

I do it in real mod and one shots like barrett or m79. In real mod, I think it decreases damage (is this true?) when you fall from quite a high. And barrett and m79'ers love to shoot you in the body, so I usually prone or crouch when I rush into them; that way, they miss miserable and I get to kill them instead.

Doesn't jumping back and forth also allow you to shoot while doing it? So wouldn't rolling hurt you in this scenario?

When trying to keep your momentum going, rolling can be a useful way of getting over bumps in the ground, or to transition from falling onto the ground without loosing too much speed.

When fitghting enemies, however, it's quite useless and can get you killed as you can't shoot while rolling, and you're much more likely to hit a nade. Only good time to use it, maybe, is to roll into cover.

I find rolling can be very usefull when jumping then using he jet pack, it seems to give you a little more speed but seems to do the exact opposite when I have speed.

Rolling is very useful, and is quite cool at times - it's kinda like a quick maneuver like the backflip, except that this one is less versatile and is ground-based. Like the others said, rolling down slopes will help you gain speed, but otherwise you'll lose speed.

When there are some (not so good) sawers charging at me (also given that the poly we're standing on is horizontal), rolling can work wonders. Before their saws can reach me, I just roll past them, while they speed across, turn around, slow down and have to pick up speed again.

It seems that people expect you to backflip more than rolling or proning.

Rolling works great for changing directions quickly. When going against knifers or sawers, rolling seems to also decrease the chance of a hit. Before the fix, rolling was also good for stopping the reload of the shotgun xD

There's a trick you can do when rolling up a "tube" like in inf_outpost. If you roll and jet you can rocket up out of it and get serious air, plus it's quicker to do it that way then to jump and jet.

You can also do it on slopes, but it's less effective.
Lol, internets.

Rolling and jetting is a great way to go off of a slope at roughly the same speed as a bunny hop, but at a noticeably lower angle. Rolling backwards is a good way to quickly change momentum.

It's good when you do it properly.

rolling is both fun, useful, and streamlines your movement making you feel more powerful, and thus greater willpower to destroy your enemies ;)  (Parkour anyone? :P)

if backflips may be included in this thread, one trick I found was that you can walljump-backflip off of a completely vertical wall when you're near the top, I use it a lot in sawing.  it's not very useful unless the enemy is above you, which would mean they're mince meat anyway.  but it's great fun and sometimes makes me feel invincible for a short time.

it decreses dmg. Rolling looks cool and sometimes help imho.

I find rolling only to be useful when trying to avoid a barrage of bullet spray from the enemy team. I guess I have not "mastered" rolling to keep to my flying/running speed, there fore it isn't very efficient to me. But then again, I am more concentrated on killing than pulling off fancy moves when being shot at.

it decreses dmg.

A few reasons why:
1. The bullet will hit your body/legs instead, and you can't really hit the head, thus helping to reduce damage.
2. You are moving AWAY from an explosive attack, so you have reduced damage.
