Projekt Yurop
« on: December 24, 2008, 09:42:44 am »
Next summer, things are going to turn just a few notches more awesome.

A couple of friends and me are going to buy an InterRail ticket. This means free access to all railways in Europe, minus the EC and IC trains which we'd have to pay for the compulsory tickets. Still, for three weeks we can travel as much as we want. And we intend to do just that.

That's a sketch of our planned route. We will be headed north, and might visit other places aswell (in blue). We haven't really planned everything, but it's going to be bumming around, maybe doing some hostel hopping. We head as north as possible, then we take on Amsterdam, proceed to south and have time to spare on the beaches of Spain.

At the end, I'll be going back all the way near Frankfurt and stay a week at Amblin's - if all goes as planned. Already talked to n00bface about it, and he'll join us at Amsterdam. Meandor - do you fellows even remember him? - might also be available for such an adventure.

No date yet, but our journey will start sometime in july our august next summer - depending on how fast we can get the money together.

So - who's up for the most unbelievable internet-related, fucked up surrealistic, alcohol and psychedelic infused experience so far of their lifetime?

Nice actually.

Personally I'd skip on Prague and/or Wroclaw for Venice and Milan.

What you'll find is that Poland and the Czech Republic are very alike. The architecture is pretty much identical and so it the atmosphere. Venice is beautiful and basically anywhere in Italy you're going to find a much more welcoming and hospitable vibe, great food and an all-round better time. Plus it'll be nice and warm and make for good relaxation before things hot up in Berlin and Amsterdam.

Wish I could, mate. I really do. I wanna tour Europe with a few friends one day, and visit many of you fellows, but mostly echo_trail. <3

I'd also like to ask you how much you estimate the cost would be, for future reference. I'm rather low on money because of college funding, but someday soon, I'll hopefully find some way.

Here are the ticket prices in Euros. A youth pass isn't that steep, but only if you really make use of it. For comparison, if I wanted to fly to Frankfurt, my plane ticket with every plus fee you have to pay would cost 56 euros - and that includes the way back.

On top of that, we'll be taking a good 300 euros or more worth of pocket money. That's also the main good argument for Prague - the beer's cheaper than in Italy and south Germany. (:

I do plan on going to the US and A in 2010 at the earliest, but intercontinantal flights are a whole different tier of expensive.

Holy cow dude, are you a masochist? Venice (and Italy in general) SUCK.  A lot.  The people there hate tourists; they're unfriendly, unhelpful, and unfair.  Venice is even worse; it's a maze of narrow roads with absolutely nothing to see, and it smells like a sewer.  The only thing redeeming about that place was that they had some pretty decent gelato, and that's hardly enough to make up for the bad stuff.

I actually enjoyed Prague.  Didn't stay there long, but there was some interesting stuff to see and it was a good time.  Wish I could say the same about Italy.  I will say that if you get a chance to go to Hungary or Switzerland, take them.  Those two countries were by far the highlights of my trip.

Maybe I have intricate connections with a notorious mafia syndicate in Italy and plan to have Demonic and any of his chums taken out.

Ever been to Italy?

I just got back on december 3rd, and you are wrong about pretty much everything ;) Venice is a great place, ST Marks Square and the Dodges palace are beautiful, and the shopping there is excellent. The 'maze of narrow roads' is completely pedestrian, and there are signs pointing you back to St Marks square at every turn. The smell is non existent. Milan, If you aren't into shopping, wasn't that much fun, EXCEPT for the gorgeous Duomo! That church is awesome!

And I never met a single Italian person there that wasn't nice to me.

Yeah, I do live in Hungary. Thought the map would be a give away, with the arrows and marks...

Also, my sister lives in Italy, Pista to be precise. Been there three years ago, and if I'd go there again, then it'd be at her place - but since we'll only have time for like two days for every location, we probably won't be going that far south.

Kaz, I was kind of hoping that we could meet up, with you coming to Bulgaria every once in a while. Still rooting, but one day man, one day...

Sadist: sweet. If you've got a route planned or anything settled, throw me a PM and we'll get something arranged. One beer's no beer, two beers are half a beer, four beers are one beer... but one beer's no beer.

also i have no idea why but my English turned out horrendous in the first post.

After some more consideration, it turns out that I will be free this summer and can therefore find a job and save some money for next summer. If I'm lucky, that is.

If that turns out to be the case, count me in!

If I do go to Europe, though, I have to meet up with echo. It would be rather cool, in my opinion, if we could somehow sync our travels so that we, say, leave from Denmark, meet up with you in Hungary, and continue on as planned. I would like to visit Milan and Venice rather than Prague, though.

But anyway, if things go the way I want them to, definitely count me in. I've always wanted to travel throughout Europe, and I'll do whatever I can to gather enough money to do so.

Edit: And if I'm going to Europe, you can bet your ass I'm gonna drink myself silly.

Yep, been to Genova, Pisa, Rome, and Venice.  My feelings about that trip were pretty well summed up in my post.

Worry not: even though I'm going with a couple of friends, our general mentality is that splitting up for a while is okay. If they want to see something big and I'd rather lay the local soldaters sister, then there's nothing lost, we'll meet up at the next city. That being said, I imagine we could agree on major stops even if our routes won't be identical.

At worst we'll wake up at the police department of Amsterdam with a hangover raging harder than Thor on viagra - and still call it the best evening of the millenium.
