Musical list of 2008
« on: December 25, 2008, 02:49:18 am »
Yeah yeah, let's go with the trend and make a best of topic for this aswell.

What were your favourite albums in 2008? If you can, provide some links to it aswell so people can discuss about it.

Plugging last.fm is a good idea. And here's my list.

Didn't really listen to anything from 2008.  The latest I have is 2007.

Ufomammut (http://www.last.fm/music/Ufomammut) - Idolum
Some of the most badass sludge / doom-metal / stoner-rock you'll ever hear (not counting Sleep and OM, of course).

Torche (http://www.last.fm/music/Torche) - Meanderthal
Tagged as sludge-pop on last.fm, which I think is a very good description. Really fun album to listen to, addictive riffs.

Grails (http://www.last.fm/music/Grails) - Take Refuge in Clean Living
Impossible to label with a genre. Just listen to it, preferably late at night and under the influence of something.

Envy (http://www.last.fm/music/Envy) and Thursday (http://www.last.fm/music/Thursday) - untitled split (EP)
Two hardcore (not hardcore in the Euro, trance/dance sense) bands. Great split, especially Thursday's songs.
Envy also did a split with Jesu this year. Listen to the song "Life Caught in the Rain" from that album if you want to get into the band.

Coldworld (http://www.last.fm/music/Coldworld) - Melancholie²
Depressive black metal / shoegaze crossover. Sounds f**king epic.

Suffocate for f**k Sake (http://www.last.fm/music/Suffocate+For+f**k+Sake) - Blazing fires and helicopters on the frontpage of the newspaper. There´s a war going on and I'm marching in heavy boots (yes, that's the title of the album... pretentious? Very much so.)

Swedish post-hardcore / post-rock / post-metal / screamo / ...

but, THE album of 2008 for me is Men as Trees (http://www.last.fm/music/Men+As+Trees) - Weltschmerz
this is f**king raw emotion pressed on a disc. also, the album is filled with Dick Proenneke quotes, who happens to be one of my heroes.

edit: my last.fm profile: http://www.last.fm/user/JayBee84
also, if you have a remotely similar taste in music as me, check out The Pax Cecilia's 2007 album "Blessed Are the Bonds".

edit: ZOMFG, how could I have forgotten about Have a Nice Life (http://www.last.fm/music/Have+A+Nice+Life) - Deathconsciousness
Regardless of your taste in music, you owe it to yourself to listen to this. Trust me, it's amazing. Bloodhail is the track of the decade.

i know that it's pointless to argue over taste in music,
but seriously.. some of you seem to make the impression that you'd only allow yourselves to listen to something that is completley un-aired ANYWHERE besides last.fm, or as unknown as i am in the music world.

i mean come on.. that man as trees thing was almost as awful as souljaboy.

woohoo this is a really flamebait post.

you are right, you can't discuss music taste, it's just different for every man. sometimes people even like some kind of music just because noone else does. I for example love reggae, people do big eyes when they hear that I like that.

maybe you can devide between openminded, and non-openminded??

Damn, you're on to me Slashnoob. I admit it, I spend my nights looking for the most obscure bands on last.fm. I don't even like the music I listen to.
You've exposed me as the big fraud I am!

Well, at least now that my secret is out in the open I don't have to pretend anymore. I will now listen to soulless, computer-generated trance music.

you're absolutely right jaybee. all trance and other forms of electronic music are completely worthless because they're composed on computers rather than with real instruments. personally i listen to real bands like metallica, i know they are completely real with their instrumental mastery.

really though venetian snares - detrimentalist is pretty much the best album made last year. apart from that, the new metallica album didn't suck and that one song from black ice that i heard is alright. pendulum - in silico is undoubtedly the worst album ever made.

you rate music on that fact if it is made with real instruments or on computer
all the pop music
even your Metallica is made by computer
without them the quality would stink
you cut it
you mix it
you make the balance and harmony
and pcs were always improvement ;)
I love Electronics like Aphex Twin hes a genius

Urgh, a music thread. Demonic I thought you said no more 'favourite' threads.  :D

Modern music is pretty lame though. Culture is dying.

If by Mindless Self Indulgence was pretty good.
also, local bands! I've got a couple EPs from bands in my area that are way better than any mainstream crap out today.

These two. I like. A lot.

Tropper: check your sarcasm meter. It's broke badly. And the G'n'r album is overrated... I would've expected something much more mind blowing after it being in the works for over so many years.

truup: She :D Yeah, that was rad, though it's still a lot like every other generic 8bit artist out there.

And If was a disappointment.

Eww, Vulbastick, Khanate is really bad. I'm tired of these generic drone doom bands that don't contribute anything meaningful to the genre. Especially the ones who had GOOD bands and stopped making GOOD music.

Anyway:

Urfaust - Three Rituals to the Far Cosmos or something like that. I dont feel like looking up the real title.

Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today & House on the Borderland.
