Story Mode?
« on: January 02, 2009, 06:20:20 pm »
NOTE: The poll is to simply show user support.

I know its been suggested before, but I'm actualling giving implementation suggestions.

This suggestion is simply one to tease the interests of those who aspire to make games. My suggestion is to add a "story mode" where you simply start off at one side of a board and try to make your way to the other side, killing enemies as you come across them. It would work as a generic side-scroller game. The only added coding needed to implement an idea like this would be text boxes. It could be as simple as when the player stands on a polygon, a text box appears above their head. Maps could then be appropriately made to host "quest" type battles. The only other implementation would be an end match polygon. When the player stands on this polygon, it would end the match, simply starting the next battle, on the next Map in the line up.

With these two additions, a story mode could easily be implemented and allow users to create their own games, sharing them on-line. It could even be possible to make them on-line.

Hmm...think of the possibilities.
What are your thoughts/suggestions?

EDIT: A discussion is more practical than simple voting without saying why.

Although the idea is creative, I think since MM has moved on to Link-Dead and based on current information about that game, story-mode would be a nice addition to it. Personally I don't like this general idea. Certain games are meant to be played in simple structures (such as Soldat, and Left 4 Dead) where only simple online play is of importance.

Soldat is a fast paced game, made to be played online. Bot/map support wouldn't be good enough to do such thing.

You can actually do something very similar by scripting, I saw a mission mod around.

Soldat has never intended to have story modes, it's more of just flying around and shooting online - stories and bots etc are extra features that have been made further possible with eC's scripting core. MM's already working on his new game Link Dead, which would have some similarities to Soldat, yet it would be a completely different game, maybe the suggestion could go there.

Was suggested before...
No - you can use scripts for almost the same effect.

According to the Soldat manual, Soldat's story goes something like this

Quote
It's Quake style:
A couple of guys decided to kill each other and you can be one of them.

On a more serious note... due to scripting and the style of Soldat, I'd say this idea is unneeded, and can be done if you REALLY want to.

Cardiac attack, sha-POW!

What you described is totally do-able with scripting.

I think that the story mode would be a perfect add-on for soldat, it would make soldat even more popular as it is. On other hand Ervis is right and as iDante said, it's all possible with scripting.

There are some things scripting can't do. This is one of them. To be able to make a decent story mode (key word here being decent) you'd need to have access to things which just aren't possible yet with Soldat's current limitations.

F12 to either making this or making it possible for others to do so.

You don't really have enough control over the bots to get them to do anything that would make a story mode any good.
