Forum Downtime: Hard drive crash

So I'm sure most or all of you are aware that the forums were offline for most of the day today.  Here is what I initially said.

I was able to get in contact with my host this evening and have him reboot the server for me.  Right now the server is running with one less hard drive.

The server will be restarted one more time in a week or two to replace the failed hard drive and copy all data back.  I will notify you guys at least a couple of hours before that needs to be done.

While the forums were down, u13.net and all of the soldat servers hosted by u13.net were also down.
Are the forums, u13 and the soldat servers all hosted on the same computer?

Yes, and the server is capable of doing a ton more than that still.

Ping both addresses. Even if the servers are down, the DNS will still be reachable. If it says they have the same IP, voila, same computer.

Not really, my network has 5 computers all use the same DNS... duh

Yes, but if all of the sites were down and the DNS came up the same for each one, one could safely assume that they were on the same computer.

while enesce is right about his home computers sharing an IP, generally if you're talking about a server then servers don't share an IP.

I just want to point out that the DNS isn't available when my server goes offline.  If it was offline for more than 12 hours, then all of the DNS caches would have expired and nothing would have worked.  This server runs the DNS for u13.net, forums.soldat.pl, and about 10 other domains.

I mean, you have more bad luck with hard drives than n00bface does with hair conditioners. Some kind of bad voodoo metaphysical shit going on here man.

That's what I get for owning so many.  If you own a bunch of something, it makes sense that you're going to have one die/be problematic more often than the person who just owns one.
