Okay, let me clarify this for all of you. Windows 7 isn't a code name, it will be the final name for the version of windows after Vista. Vienna was one of the code names, if I remember correctly. I've got several subscriptions to computer magazines and a bunch have reviews of the Windows 7 beta and pretty much all say it isn't much better than Vista.

But anyway, I have no real interest in it whatsoever and I'm perfectly content with using a combination of Linux, FreeBSD, and XP throughout my day to day computing activities.

Linux is OKAY.  It doesn't support my wireless card, so that's one reason not to use it on my crappy laptop. >.>

The only reason I use it is because of 2 things.  1) I don't get viruses that easy.  2) It runs fast for a 2002 laptop.

Windows 7 is pretty good.  It's better than vista in my opinion.

Hell do you mean "OKAY"? It's damn perfect! No viruses, no trialware, no crapware, can play a million awesome games with wine (I'm currently playing Half Life2 at full settings @ 1920*1200), support for the most efficient filesystems, excellent networking, can play bluray dvd's, supports all of my wifi cards just fine, etc, etc. The list could go on forever.

From what I hear It is much better than Vista. The beta is also generating way more interest than beta of Vista.
I am a linux user and I care about it for several reasons.

1) Vista sucks but XP is so outdated. I need something modern to recommend to clients. They usually shy away when I say Linux.
2) I got a DirectX 10 video card and I want an OS that will support it and not suck!
3) I also want a windows OS that has good multi-threaded support and does not suck.

I guess I just want it for gaming :)

Anyway, I'll probably get a beta and put it in a VM just to see what it is like.

You dont have to be babied. just turn all that s**t off. Idn why people are hating on vista for no good reason.

full of bugs.
I've been using Vista Ultimate for slightly more than a year. Did I get any bugs? NO! Well, except some minor ones (taskbar not reverting to aero mode etc.) It's probably because I update windows asap.

if had noting BUT problems with vista and i update it asap as well =\ bit i learned to live with it

Yeah, not too long ago I had to copy around 8 gigs of .VOB and other dvd files to two flash drives off of Vista, it took nearly an hour. That's pretty shitty considering the flash drives were both new, an 8 gig and a 6 gig. If the computer was running XP, it wouldn't have taken anywhere near that long.

probably because ANYTHING that runs on vista can run with better performance on XP, especially games.

Negative. Multi-threaded apps run better on Vista. Do a render in blender and compare.

Anything running the Unreal engine uses multi threaded code. Buuttt, thats the only one I know of :p

bja, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion if you ever do run that beta.

Well there is no efficient multi threaded gaming model that I know of. The best they have been able to do is split display and physics. Game logic might be on its own thread but that is the easiest part. Games are single threaded. If you wanna know why, start here....

I did not know this. I am probably gonna check out how they did it.

I was able to install it. So far look and feel is just like visa. With the exception of the task bar. It looks more like a KDE app. The one cool thing about it though. If you click on an item in the quick launch, it does not open a new button for it as an open program. The icon it self switched to the "down" state (if you will). It saves on room.
I have not installed anything on it yet. Thats the next step. However, I have not been able to open anything without a settings box popping up asking me to adjust the settings for the application I have not even seen yet.

The real test is how it plays with other programs.
