Hard Disk Error
« on: January 18, 2009, 09:54:58 pm »
My older computer is getting a hard disk error (message popping up when I start it up about failure imminent on hard disk.

"Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: MAXTOR 4R080J0-(PM)

WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. Failure may be imminent" is the exact warning.

It also says to press F2 to continue it does a check for consistancy on the drive and also says "The type of filesystem is FAT32" Its checking the D: drive. I've let the check run twice already and each time I start it back up again it does the same check and error message. The computer is a HP pavilion a335w. Any help would be appreciated. I assume I probably have to just buy a new one but I don't want to spend money if I don't have to.

You should immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. Failure may be imminent.

Jesus, just do what it tells you and you'll be okay.

Well you don't have to spend money, you could try stealing a new hard drive.

Fact is that your hard drive is damaged beyond repair and needs replacing. The computer told you that.

Although, you could try disconnecting it from the computer and reconnecting it.

meh, it's running the FAT 32 which is horribly shitty and unreliable. It might have gotten corrupt.
Reinstall Windows and delete the current partition(s) when it asks and have it install into the free space generated using the NTFS filesystem.

(if the above does not work, get a new HD. I see them horribly cheap at garage sales all the time, finding affordable ones are not hard)

That's what you get for buying a Maxtor drive.

They're so cheap you shouldn't have a problem getting another one.

Seriously, you can get a decent sized one (80-120) for 50 bucks.

I assume this is a Dell machine?  Call Dell, tell them you're getting this message.  If your computer is still under warranty then they should replace it for free.

Regardless, back up your information immediately.

Reinstalling Windows will not help.

Go to www.newegg.com

It's the best place to find hard drives.

Thanks for the help, I'm probably going to have some guys at a college fix it; they tend to do it for free/cheap to get practice or whatever.
