Photoshop is a professional program, it might be easier to use Paint.net for a while and when you get the hang of it use photoshop from there (Paint.net is easier and more simplistic)

Read up some tutorials, that way you will learn about the features and how they work.

Paint.NET tutorials can be found here, check out the legacy tutorials also, lots of cool shit in there. Alot of the things in Paint.NET are pretty much the same in photoshop, so if you learn how to use the features in Paint.NET, it will be so much easier to use photoshop.

Yes it does, they are called plugins. You will come across these 'plugins' as you read the 'tutorials'.

You don't really need fancy features to create a good avatar. Look around at others' avatars to get a sense of what goes into an avatar; the Canadian flag one you made was a step in the right direction.

Keep in mind that regardless of your avatar dimensions, SF will resize to 90x90. If you're using a rectangular image, be careful that it doesn't get squashed just to fit the square dimensions.

You might also want to try out some different fonts. Google search will turn up quite a few websites with thousands of free fontfaces.

yea i know  but how am i supposed to make the Canadian flag square with out it looking squished?

and is it better to make a big (square) picture and shrink it or make a small picture?

theses can be put into paint.NET?

When you try to pick out what goes into a picture, you are looking at the tools used to make it.

Also, use layers.  look at someone's sig or something and guess how many layers they used and what part of the image is on each one.

Just to start you off, my userbar was made with 8 layers (but you can use as many as you feel comfortable with, weather it's 5 or 500)

Just install the fonts as usual, and PDN will have them in the font dropdown box after you restart PDN

With more than one layer, you can easily shuffle stuff around until it looks good. Layers are used for a lot more than just that, but it's the most basic feature of the layer concept.

AFAIK you can install fonts while PDN is open; textbox should check for new fonts when you make a new one. I know PS is like that, no reason PDN shouldn't.
