don't get GIMP if you already have photoshop IMO.

and layers are very important, you are better off working with them, there are lots of uses.

Paint.NET doesn't detect new fonts, you'll have to restart it (at least it doesn't for me)

Yep. It can be useful for reverting since Undo states can get overwritten, or pushed beyond the memory limit to become literally irrecoverable otherwise. You can work completely in a new layer(s) and then whisk them away to compare with what you had before.
