advances in gaming
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:45:15 am »
i know there are a fair number of people on here that know a shit ton about games.

im not the greatest gaming guy ever, i mean i play them when i get the chance cause theyre fun and i enjoy it but i dont have that much knowledge on like the community and whats going on in the world of gaming

so if you have anything interesting, related to video games or simulation or whatever, just post it in here cause im curious. i like hearing about new physics engines and stuff too, like when you see those demonstrations of water being broken up and splashing and all that

basically what im saying is; am i going to be able to have randy sex with hot aliens and blow up planets and shit like in star wars, only in virtual reality like in the minority report, before i die ???

shit yeah that would be cool

what cool new games are coming out too, with good physics and that :0

is gaming going to be console bound forever ??? WHAT IS COMING

I'm hoping for a non-realistic revolution. In other news, Nintendo and third party affiliates are busting out tons of RPG's I want. Also, I think in the future more and more games will have internet online stuff, its happening quite a bit already and becoming really popular. From sharing maps to playing with others. That's all I got.

The coming evolution of gaming will be to an almost download-only system. I don't think this will happen THAT soon, because the places like Gamestop are going to be fighting it hard, but it will happen. I think we'll get there somewhere in the range of 2015-2020.

As for current stuff. I guess the fire propagation system in Far Cry 2 is pretty neat. There were some interesting things shown at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), like the new 3d display thing. You have to wear glasses and have a special TV, but from what I hear it's pretty great. And no, I am not talking about those goddamn red/blue lens glasses. Those create an almost see-through 3d image. This creates a very solid looking one.

Hmm, what else. O, you know those hologram type things that are some book covers, where if you look at it from a different direction it's a different picture? They have shown a TV like that where you will see a different image depending on where you are sitting. Basically what that means is that you can have 4 people playing on the same screen but they would all have their own fullscreen image.

And physics in general have gotten much improved, like the Euphoria animation engine in GTA IV is pretty impressive. And Havok is always pretty good.

There was also some stupid environmental effect thing that you can buy. So you plug it into your PC and it has all these fans and lights and some other crap. So when you're walking around in the game it will dim the lights to what the lights are in the game, and blow wind on you and shit. Don't know who would actually buy that though.

That's everything I can think of right now. But what Killroy said is definitely happening. And that is awesome.

As for the alien love thing. I think before you die that could happen. So there's still hope.

What I find interesting is that graphics cards are already able to render physics and soon they'll be able to render artificial intelligence, thereby removing a significant load from other hardware components. For what purpose? I'm not sure myself, but it leaves room for innovation.

Halo is like the one of the most fruity games ever. I'd hardly call it GRIMDARK and brown and grey.

I was talking about Killzone 2.

I think/hope that cooperative gameplay is going to get some more focus. Valve's left 4 dead executed it wonderfully, and I hope others will have a go at making games like that.

And I'm talking about games designed for coop ground-up, not those half assed coop solutions you find in games nowadays.

Phong shaded textures were a big leap from a few years ago and provide a shortcut towards photo-realistic environments whilst not actually consuming much memory to render considering what they can do. Graphics cards in a few years will have 2 or 3 gigs for being able to render realtime phong reflections on almost anything imaginable, and then we're going to be damn close to photo-realism. Texture memory will no longer be an issue, we've almost reached a point where texture resolution doesn't need to be any larger.

When we get there then console generations will slow down, there won't be as many leaps forward in technology.
