Geo, I didn't mean to turn this into a US policy discussion topic, i was merely trying to prove that civilian acces to firearms does not necessarily equal safety.

I know, I know - just trying to nip things in the bud before anything gets out of hand.

As I said, the important thing (if we want to talk about gun control, etc.) is whom we'll be living next to and our standings with them.  Which is something I think Panzer should address - we talking post apocalypse here, or potential tourist trap for rich earthlings?

From PANZER's original post, it looks like Earth is still very much present, but immigration to our colony is restricted and Earth interference is limited as much as possible.

i dont really know about guns. places that have guns and those that outlaw them still seem to have similar crime rates so i dont think it matters that much

i think it would probably be better if guns were allowed to be purchased but with them harder to get hold of. perhaps you can only buy a gun if youve got a clean record or something

i dunno

How about on this new moon colony, to have no weapons allowed whatsoever but legalize pot, cigarettes, psychedelics (make them less dangerous, after all if we can go to the moon and live we can certainly take the dangers out of some drugs), prostitution (this never hurts anyone, as long as it's regulated and the government hands out loads of free condoms and pills that wipe people clean of any STDs).

I guess make it so everyone's as happy as can be so the need for guns, weapons and other things just doesn't exist.
There are other worlds than these

Problems:
  • Low-quality firearms can be constructed by anyone. As for simpler weapons, e.g. are you going to outlaw knives? There are a myriad necessary objects for societies that also make decent weapons. Heck, fists count. It is impossible to illegalize weapons.
  • Legalizing hard drugs is problematic. Removing dangers from them costs money. So unless you plan on taxing the people to pay for others screwing with their minds, low-quality dangerous drugs will be cheaper and therefore much more popular. The result is a black market and all the lovely things that go with it.
  • Prostitution, and contraception, always hurt everyone, including the culture of the society. They must both be illegal. I realize on this particular point I'm spitting against hurricane-force winds, but I don't base my opinions on what other people think.

Human nature can't be changed. It's inherently human to never be satisfied with material things like whores and drugs. Weapons will be fashioned, property crimes and violent crimes will occur (and with far greater frequency than if the society were better structured), there's no way around it.

I tell you what would keep the peace/enforce the law?

A breed of genetically enhanced super soldiers who ride hug ants into battle. Just imagine the Master Chief riding a massive ant.

That would definetly keep some peace.

You can find me in the masturbation thread. At least that one is somewhat more interesting

No, you misunderstood me. I think it's an abysmal idea to tax (most) drugs, but that's a different topic (one I've already discussed in this topic). What I meant to ask here, though, was not whether jrgp intended to tax the consumers of the drugs as an excise tax, but whether he intended to tax everyone in order to pay for some people's moronic self-harm and make government-sold hard drugs cheaper.
