What counts as a sport?
« on: February 01, 2009, 06:27:45 pm »
People have called everything from cup stacking to competitive lumberjack lumber-jacking a sport.

So whats your definition of a sport? Does motorsport count as a "real" sport? Cheerleading? Badmitton?

Require mental or physical work, has to be entertaining, and is not the most useful skill to have in life.

And has to be non-virtual, and IMO, you have to be the one doing most of the work.

Anything you'd rather be doing while you're doing something you know you should be doing.

If that were true masturbation would be a sport.

So everything has the potential to be a sport if someone likes it better than something else?

'S pretty vague...

Yeah... The state keeps trying to push "new sports" or make things a sport that shouldn't be just to push kids into getting active.

Entertaining is so vague though, I hate soccer but people murder each other over that sport.

I thought of this one 5min after I wrote my first definition

Has to be entertaining to watch(or play), competitive and has specific rule, guidelines and goal.

How can cup stacking be a sport?

I would take Football(soccer) over Football(American) any day.

I learnt not to have discussions like this.
Girls won't like it if you say that horse-racing is not a sport..

A sport is an event which is a contest between two or more people or two or more teams of people, the purpose of which is to entertain an audience.

Football/soccer is bollocks.
American football is a joke.
I quite like ice hockey.

Anything that requires two or more teams in competition. Any competition could be "considered" a sport but a sport that matters has a big fanbase.

No, the purpose of the media aspect of sports is to entertain the audience. The overall purpose of sports is centered around the competitors with a common goal of being the best and/or being the champion. A fanbase does not have to be involved with sports at all. The foundation of what one would call a sport would be the competition itself.
