It has to be a game before it could ever be a sport.

An athlete must put their physical and mental abilities against another person's in some kind of strategic game.

Therefore:
Chess is out

I see what you did there.

I think I'll go weep now...oh the pain... :'(

Sport is supposed to be fun...or at least beneficial to both teams. Sport shouldn't involve killing and hating, competitiveness yes, but not hate. Sport is an activity...an exercise. War is not sport.

One of the oldest sports in the world was used to decide which team would get sacrificed to the gods.

I suppose you're right, but I belive sport is also catergorised as requiring 'fair play'...heh...nukes vs. machine guns

Pff fair play has nothing to do with sports or war.

Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?

In my oppinion, it has to involve some sort of physical activity. I don't see competitive gaming as a sport. You can'd find Counter Strike at your local sporting goods shop.

Ping pong counts. That game can be fierce at times. [retard]

Chess was the battleground of the Cold War (well, that and proxied in Africa/Afghanistan); it was kind of like the Russian version of South Korean obsession with Starcraft. It may be boring, but it's still a balanced and highly competitive game. But a sport? Well Snooker is a sport, but then you need good control of the cue, rather than simply thinking of what the best move would be.

Good point SDFilm.  I personally dont think Chess is a sport.  I find the things that count as sports, and things that you do that is exercising.  Soccer, Football, Tennis, and so on.  All things that require energy to compete? ;)

I was gonna say, you'd better hope Smegma doesn't end up in here. He's right though.

But it doesn't require any level of concentration.
I attend grammar school, last grade, and ignorance is all around me. Well, good for them. Ignorance is bliss.

So..If somebody plays chess just for fun, but doesn't actually concentrate on how he is playing, it is not considered a sport?

Competitive sleeping...I like that idea.  Very much.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

If someone goes to sleep in the middle of a badminton match, is it still a sport?
