MEGA MAN
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:31:56 pm »
What ever happened to hard, challenging games? That last actual hard game I ever played was Megaman X, which was still easier then Megaman 8... I miss the harder games that wouldn't tell you how to beat the mission just because you died twice.

Those are gone in the age of dying with no adverse effects, auto-healing after 2 seconds out of the fight, invincible teammate bulletsponges, and overall bland walk-in-the-park games that appease to masses of people who don't want to spend too much time on a game and can't go 3 seconds without killing something.

Play megaman 9, it came out like 6 months ago. I like playing the endless levels at my friend's house because I'm terrible in the story mode.

I don't have the money to get a game, nonetheless a 360.

I've never played a truly hard game in the sense you mean, but I always impose artifical constraints on my playing when I find a game too easy. E.g. I love Homeworld, but it became pretty easy so I played through it intending to never lose a single ship and capture every enemy frigate/cap ship, never building my own ships unless the game required it. Classes hit before I could finish though.

Other people do this, right? Go through RTSs restarting if you lose a unit?
Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I'd gladly do it because
I don't want to fade away.

My very first playthrough in Homeworld i tried to go without salvaging anything, but found it very hard :(

So yeah my frigate fleet was massive at the end.

Most fun moment for me so far is in the Kadeshi missions, using well-positioned HC groups to use burst on the incoming swarmer groups (and then salvage the useless fuel pods). Instant pwnage. It required a huge amount of fine-tuning on the second nebula mission though, I'd be spending 20 minutes for every 30 seconds.

HC's were so badass, MTC's were useless. If you hit a fighter with an HC, it'd be done. MTC's took to long :P

Pretty much the only useful strike craft in single-player, against anything. Not counting free salvages, the most cost-effective unit in the game.

Huh, you thought X1 was easier than 8? I thought 8 was almost too easy... :P

Seconding that recommendation of Mega Man 9 if you have access to it (download for PS3 or Wii, I'd recommend the latter for improved oldschoolishness). It's godly. Really took me right the hell back.

Halo 3? HARD!? Please...
Halo 2 was harder then that, and it was still nothing campared to the old games way back when.
Games are just too easy now, If I had an Xbox 360, I woulf probably get most of the acheivements my first playthrough.

Yes, it was on legendary. I played it at my friends, he went to sleep, and I played it for about 4-5 hours on Legendary, and beat it.

PUZZLE QUEST! >_>

But yeah, I agree with you. You don't really see games that push your nerves to the limit anymore. I miss those myself.

Difficulty settings aren't that important anymore, if you learn to play the game at an easy difficulty you will suck but still win, if you train starting at the hardest, the game won't be that hard anyway.

Play Nikujin. Or Tekkyuuman if that's too hard. Lots of reflexes and level memorization required in the later stages of both, with simplistic and brutally hard gameplay.

*EDIT* Downloads: http://ikiki.sokushinbutsu.com/himoji/game.htm (Nikujin is the 13th one down on the yellow list, tekkyuuman is the only one on the red list)

The last part of Far Cry.

You know, the dozens of f**king rocket wielding mutants who take forever to kill.

Hardest game I've played in a long time.

Shit was tough. Had to play atleast 10 times to beat it.
