New skateboarder - tips are very welcome.
« on: February 04, 2009, 12:02:24 pm »
Hi there. Most of you probably don't know me, as I kind of read much more than actually write on these forums.

Anyway, I always liked the looks of skateboarding, and I recently started getting into it myself (Yeah, in january...). I started off on a very cheap deck I bought at a toy store, which broke at my 5th ollie attempt. I just bought a quality deck, which feels WAAAAAY different than the cheap one, so I don't even feel comfortable riding it yet. I am able to pull off a toeside railstand, but apart from half an ollie, that's all I can do.

Oh yeah, and I'm 20, so I'm kind of a late starter.

Can you guys give me some tips? I barely know anything about skateboarding (though I looked around some guides on about.com) Also, feel free to post your experiences when you began skating. That is, if you skate.

Half an ollie? Whats that?
-One foot on the back of the board, and one somewhere in the middle
-Stomp down on the back, when you hear it snap, slide the foot that was in the middle to the front of the board (sliding it over the sandpaper stuff)

BMXing IMO is alot better though, the girlies love it.

I'm with you on that one, mate. BMXing rapes the shit out of any boarder. Oh, and it's called grip tape ;)

Yeah I know how to do an ollie, but I just cant seem to do it yet. Either I pop kinda high, or I just barely get off the ground and land nicely.

Actually you gotta stop thinking about how to do it, and just go with it. If you think about doing a trick in terms of technical steps, you're very likely to fail. Just get out there and try, and keep trying until you finally nail it. No one becomes good skaters in a matter of days.

Never ride goofy, like I do, until you get good balance on the board. It makes things tricky.

Please, no broken bone pictures.

If your skateboard is under $50 you have no right to call your self a skateboarder. The cheap boards you buy at Walmart are nothing like the real thing.

Call me WACKED, but I never really found the value of skateboarding.

What is so great about riding a two by four with wheels?

Huh, what's that intense screaming I hear outside?  ;)

What Revelations 6:8 SHOULD say: "And behold a pale horse, and his name who sat on him was Death... and all of the United States Marine Corps followed with him."

The first one... I don't know. I perfer football.

The second, however... is a whole 'nother thing. It's a whole 'nother ballpark. Matter of fact, it's a whole different sport (both literally and figuratively  ;)) altogether.

I just don't get the advantage of the 2x4 with wheels over a mountain bike.

A lot. Basically, football is like combat but without weapons. Hell, you even get a helmet and plating.  :D

Add in the risk of injury or death... it's a blast.

In football, if you get hurt, it's 'cause either your tactics were faulty, or your opponent is good. With skateboarding, if you get hurt, it's 'cause you're an idiot.  ;)

I've never been any good at skateboarding, but I sure do know what trolling is. You can keep it up, but you all should probably also tag on some content relevant to the topic title.

I don't see how trampling over people, and breaking bones in the first 5 minutes very exhilarating.

Skateboarding is very tricky, so you'll have to get accustom with the stance, motion etc.

I've tried it, but failed, so I stick with riding my bike and playing soccer. :)
