Sin Bin
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:16:50 pm »
Have we stopped using the sin bin? It seems like quite a few people have been temp banned, muted, or banned and nothing has been posted in it for awhile. I've always like the thing; we should use it more. Not on me [pigtail]

Yeah, I was just talking to jrgp about this earlier.  Admins need to start using the sin bin every time someone is banned or whatever.

The lack of sin bin updates coincides quite nicely with both chakra and demonic's apparent inactivity.

Honestly I think Sin Bin should be mandatory because it makes the admins take responsibility; if the admin can't take everyone knowing who was banned and why which admin that person doesn't deserve to be banned.

While I agree with your first post, I highly disagree with part of the second.

For example, I just got done flipping back through pages of ban log (up 'til Oct 17th - the last active Sin Bin post.  Just happens to be mine.  ;)), and the majority of bans are random ip addresses without any member name attached.  Three users have been unbanned since then, a handful of others were spam bots/horrible spammers, or posted extremely disturbing content and thus get insta ban regardless of whether or not it was reported.  One requested to be banned and even made a topic about it.

Miles Moses/Captain Ben was muted (after evading a previous ban for spam) for posting a picture of a fat nude women eating a horrible piece of cake.  Made a new name and got banned as a result of evading the system.

That about sums up every ban that has taken place since the last posts.  The vast majority are people whom no one on the forums ever knew about, mainly because filters are set up to take care of interweb spam of that sort.

Other admins/mods feel free to correct me on this.  Also, should there be any bans in the future, your point is noted.

Didn't that HARDCORE PORNOGRAPHY guy get banned...I was wondering why it wasn't updated. Apparently I wasn't hardcore enough, although he was so hardcore he got himself banned :D!

Yeah, I get not telling us about random spambots and stuff, but I was mostly talking about the whole debacle with ben where it was fairly unknown for awhile who did what to him and when. Which I think shouldn't happen. Plus the Sin Bin was interesting...

Well, the Sin Bin isn't there for amusement.

No one gets banned without due reason.  A brief search of his posts would make it clear enough he was spamming like it was going out of style.

Just curious - were you honestly bothered by the lack of a post in the Sin Bin, or did you just regret the fact you couldn't read up on some potentially juicy gossip?  While I agree posts should be made in there for bans, the more you respond about it the more I wonder.

I know a guy whos post was edited just so he could be banned.

The reason? Gram didn't like him.

Very responsible of him.

Both. It wasn't for the gossip; many of the posts were pretty funny. There were a few reasons I started this:, there was no reason to not post in it, some of them were funny, I didn't always know people were actually banned until a few days later, I thought if people didn't post in it we might as well delete it, its good to make a common place for that if you were gone for a few days, and like I said I think people should have to take responsibility for banning. The idea wasn't gossip, the thought never crossed my mind. Some posts were admittably funny, however. Also, it was put there for a reason, we might as well use it.

For all I know, people that have been muted should be counted as major updates and be included in the sin bin, for one, they have sinned, and they can post in the forums in the same way they have been banned.

*can't

And Gram was removed from moderation.  Moot point, good day.

Gossip, funny...whatever - semantics, really, and almost one in the same in terms of what I'm getting at.  Point is, it's not meant for amusement purposes.  If people writing in it care to throw their own twist in, that's fine.  But don't expect amusing posts to get cranked out in there.

As for responsibility, in banning someone there's a description available to admins describing the nature of the ban.  People who ban take the responsibility to state a reason so others (i.e. admins/mods) can reference it and know why.  That's how I figured out who did what after going back through the ban log 'til October of last year.  In short, it's not as though no one is keeping a record of what happens - you just didn't see the minute amount of bans that weren't spam, etc. related.

No offense, but it's kinda hard to see what you're getting at with a few points in your post contradicting each other.  Hope I addressed things to your liking, though.

If it's just bans and mutings going in there, then I'm not opposed.  As I and others have said, any future bans will get stuffed in there.  But in all honesty, it's been pretty slow in the ban hammer department since October.
