Universality vs. One-man-army.

This topic was on fracs AGES ago(a few years), but I thought it would be nice to get some different perspectives on it.

In Soldat, there are two types of players:

People who can use every gun with a certain proficieny, and players who have mastered one gun.

These two groups often have different playing styles: but which is the more effective? That's for you to decide, but here are the advantages and disadvantages of each group.

One Gunners

Advantages:
+ Their chosen gun is a fearsome weapon in their hands;
+ After lots of training, they can take out most type of opposition;
+ Reliable teammates, as you can always count on their skill;
+ It doesn't take them long to re-gain their skills after a break.
Disadvantages:
- They don't take weapon changes very lightly;
- There are situations which their weapon simply can't handle;
- They are often predictable;
- It's often harder for them to adapt to a new combat situation.

All-rounders

Advantages:
+ Can adapt to new combat situations quickly;
+ They can surprise the enemy by choosing a new gun each respawn;
+ It's hard to counter them as they can come up with something new;
+ They can take a lot of roles and can be used both on main and alt.
Disadvantages:
- They often don't have outstanding abilities and can be bested by One-gunners;
- Less reliable, as if they don't play their cards right, they get mauled;
- When they don't find the right gun for the combat early, the enemy can get easy caps;
- It requiers more time to learn this style of play, and they get back into their Soldat shape more slowly after a break.

If anyone has more to add, please post. Opinions about also welcome, and generally, which type of player are You?

Me, personally I only use ONE gun. All I use are the Deagles, I find that they can work in any situation.

I've gotten pretty damn good with them over the years, but there are times where I do wish I did know more than one gun.

What do you guys think?

I consider myself a combination of the two, actually. I have assortment of guns that I can fall back on. And from time to time I would do very well with a particular gun for a week or two, and then suck with it the next week.

I am a bit of an all rounder, although I rarely use socom, chainsaw, barrett or even knife any more.  I haven't mastered the minimi at all, but I'd like to, it's very powerful in the right hands.  depends what mood I'm in I probably use Ak and spas most, but also ruger and deagles a lot too.

all rounder, because there are just some moments some weapon is made to use it there (aktrough ak is universal)

I'm more of a lone operator, mostly because then I only have to worry about if I mess up or not.

I'm not an all rounder, yet I can only handle specific set of guns.

I'd say generally one weaponner fare better than generalists. As more generalist has to rely on nades to cover their weak gun ass.

I, like Gato, am a little of both. For awhole I have been mostly exclusively using Ruger/Knife but that was mostly only because Ruger was the last gun (and the hardest in my opinion) I learned. I am now back to bouncing between guns usually using one or two a day occasionally switching. You have to be able to do both if you really want to affect the course of every game you play. Some maps call for singularity, some need you to mix it up.

I'd consider myself an all rounder. For my first year or so of playing. I used the classic controversial Barrett LAW religiously. But then it was time for change. I went to the AK for a another year or so, sticking with the LAW as a secondary. But as I matured as a Soldat players, I realized that these combos couldn't do for every map. Specially when the custom map boom came along. So I started to mix it up, and have come to love it.

I know choose weapons based on map and game mode, and depending on what game mode, what team. And so for the last year and a halfish mixing it up has been working great. Don't get bored, and have fairly good use with most of the weapons. Some better than others. Looking back now I don't see how players stick to one weapon with all the maps that are played. Its a big weakness, but as the original post states. If you do stick with it, you are gonna be good with it.

The only weapon I can't make at least one kill per spawn with is the knife. I can use every other weapon, (currently learning the Deagles, the last weapon I need to understand :D) but the knife is the one I have the most trouble with.

I pretty much only use the MP5, Barrett, Ruger, and Steyr with my secondary weapon always being the knife. I guess I've mastered these weapons to the best of my ability and are good with them, but absolutely suck with the others. I guess I'm pretty useful to my team in some matches and useless to my team in others. It's probably better to be a well rounded all weapons master than to be really good at only a few.

I am more universal in my choice of weapons. However, whenever possible, I'll stick to one weapon, and there are some weapons I try to avoid since I don't use them well at all. For example, I'm not good with Spas in actual player vs player combat as I'm not comfortable with the weapon and I'm a slow-moving player.

Recently, I'm sticking to the AK-74 until situations arise whereby the AK won't be very effective. Then I'll just switch accordingly. This is where my knowledge on the various weapons would prove very effective - so that I can pick an effective gun to counter my opponents quickly and not have to keep switching endlessly just to find the perfect weapon.

I find myself relying on my guns more than my grenades though.

I guess I can call myself an all-rounder. I try to use as many guns as possible, simply because one gun gets fucking boring after not too long. But if it's a serious match, and whatever I'm using doesn't seem to be quite effective enough, I can always revert to AUG or Ruger.

I'm more of the middle-ground. I use barret, AK, MP5 and Deagles. There hasn't been a situation for me yet in which none of those is effective.

Same. You spend so much time trying to master the weapons, you forget about the nades. D:

I play only with barret usually. Knife too. I think that I'm skilled enough to handle most of the situations, though sometimes I switch to minimi, M79 or change the secondary

I use every weapon I can in every situation except for really tight maps like Tropiccave and Nuubia. I also stray away from the M79 and of course, the poor neglected minigun.
