Explosions? Lethal?
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:10:16 pm »
From what Ive seen, explosions do little to no damage to a player. Its always the grenade, or the M79 bullet, or even the LAW missle. Im starting to think the explosion is there for visual effects. I know that explosions do push, but if explosions were more lethal, would this change the weapon balance at all? Im thinking if they did twice the damage than what they do now.

Discuss.

... nades are deadlier than weapons themselves.

Yeah, but its the actual grenade, not the explosion. Its like killing someone with a baseball.

You mean that explosions have too small blast radius (they deal good damage when someone touches the nade/bullet/missle, but when he is 2 cm from center of explosion, he should be killed as well)?

If yes, than this is what I say:
You are probably speaking about normal mode, in which I and not experienced enough; I play exclusively realistic. In realistic explosions are fine imo.
I think that (in realistic) making explosions more deadly would make explosive weapons (mostly grenades) too powerful.

Actually, the explosions do a pretty good and balanced amount of damage. I don't see a need to really increase it any further, even though the blast radius is quite small but it's actually just enough. Besides, the explosive weapons are pretty much already strong enough, and the main use of the explosion itself is the very powerful push and that can be helpful for sweeping out people who are hiding or camping around. There is no need to make them more powerful. If anything, the self-damage for explosions should have been higher. The only explosive weapon really worth buffing in terms of power is the cluster grenade, but then again, no one uses them.

Also, if an explosive projectile were to hit a collider (eg: boxes), it is not considered a direct hit to the enemy, but the explosive damage would actually be amplified so greatly that it can even result in a one hit kill.

If you're talking about realistic, the explosions in realistic does a hell load of damage already. As long as I could hit somewhere nearby, an opponent can get killed. This is balanced for the case of Realistic because the damage done in realistic is very high, which makes 1-hitters a lot less useful.

It just came back to my mind, and that should be changed - you cannot change explosive weapons' stats in weapons.ini (at least it's not working correctly), for example even with damage set to 1 it kills in one shot.

Oh, changing the damage is weapon.ini simply changes EXPLOSIVE damage.

If you want to change the explosive so that it does not kill in one hit, that's unfortunately, impossible, because it's been hard-coded into the game.

Well, I've just tried setting M79 damage to 0 and shooting it near a bot. He still recieived damage, and I'm sure that I didn't hit him directly, so it was explosive damage.

Anyway, I think the way in which weapons.ini handles explosives should be changed.

The problem is that if the explosive damage is being increased, it makes nade/M79 boosting harder. It has already been made harder twice IIRC. IMO it is one of the tactical parts of certain maps and should be promoted.

Last year, I dreamt I was pissing at a restroom, but I missed the urinal and my penis exploded.

Yes, and I'd like to be able to change it.

+1 agree.

Nades onehit me regardless of where they hit. =(
