ern free monney!
« on: February 12, 2009, 08:37:23 pm »
What the fuck is with all the advertisements and bots that have been on the forum recently? Did someone screw up the permissions or are we just going to get craploads(3) of bots from now on?

So apparently I get more spam than this entire forum.
Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?

If these few bots can somehow register itself and post advertisements recently and at a rather short span of time, then we can be expecting a whole lot more of them coming around.

It wasn't a bot, the guy has 90+ posts.  Either way, that link was not appropriate and problematic, thus the need for removing it and locking the topic.

Not necessarily. I think the reason we didn't have so many real bots coming around on the older forums is that it had the user answer a simple math problem (a question bots aren't intelligent enough to answer) instead [or in addition to] of having them type random garbled characters into a box.

That's the thing...these new forums don't have the bot solve math problems (something bots are currently not coded to be able to do) like the old ones did and instead of them best captcha's (which bots are all pretty much designed for nowadays.)

To demonstrate that solving math problems really keeps bots out, take a look at TMS. Its registration system doesn't have you type strange letters and instead has you answer a simple, one-step, math problem. Not once has a bot ever gotten in during the 2.5 years the site's been up. I guarantee you that if it was a captcha instead, I would have had to deal with them long ago.

QFT!

Studies show 93% of all account-based websites could be improved by systematically excluding dumb people. Especially if they self-select themselves by failing the math problem. I would support adding a deprecating comment if the wrong answer is typed in. F*cking Untermensch.

I actually agree with the math thing, maybe if it was year 9 level questions it'd keep the 12yo's out at least

I vote for the hard math problem. But the people already signed in should solve it, too :)
