Save Polyworks from rotting away
« on: February 28, 2009, 06:49:33 am »
Hello everyone,
Polyworks sourcecode is available for some time now and that's nice, but why we don't make a public svn repo and a bugtracker so that everyone can help because Anna seems to have lost her motivation to continue coding or just has no time for it.

What do you think?

To be honest, I think making a polyworks alternative in c++ and gtk/qt and making it cross platform would be the best bet, instead of continuing to work on a program written in a language deemed obsolete by ms nearly 11 years ago..

Yeah I tried that once but I took the wrong framework for that. But why gtk/qt and not wxWidgets?

I was gonna do that (make a cross-platform mapmaker) but then I started doing other stuff.

If anyone wants to work on one with me I'd be totally for it.
I've already done a C PMS reader, and it would be really easy to make mar77a's c++ OpenGL renderer thing working with that.

Since I have several Linux machines at my disposal, I'm willing to help test out whatever you make.

So any progress yet?
Is there a public svn repos? If not could someone host it? (FliesLikeABrick maybe).
I could handle Windows Vista x64 and Windows XP sp3 compiling and testing.
But I think Polyworks should be kept up to date anyways since a good Map-Editor needs time to grow.

If someone does update it.
Please make it so you can have more then one texture on the same map.
Not multi texture (Texture with different layers)
Have it so in texture properties you can open the texture folder and change that individual poly.
So I don't have to make a building with a grass texture. -,-'

One of the only things polyworks is missing.

Impossible. That's not a polyworks flaw, the map structure is coded to have one texture.

Shoozza: You've seen my start on this. Unfortunately, I'm doing programming for other people right now as well as school so I don't have much time to work on it.
I'll get around to it eventually.

I could host one for you on my recently-turned turbo fast and reliable home connection, if need be.

I talked to FLiesLikeABrick, we will get everything we need. We just need to wait some time. So don't worry ;)

Another option is java. IMO it is a lot easier to code for cross-platform development and much easier on the end-user not having to recompile. Also the option of using polyworks on a website would be possible, and flippin cool. I'll try and contribute some psuedo code, setting up an JOGL environment to work with iDante's java pms reader.

Why don't you just host it on google code? It has everything you could possibly need. If it ever does go up, i would contribute.

I think what we need is nice, fast, Direct-X based map editor for Windows.
Why care about cross-platform capabilities?

umm....PW uses DirectX. And as for cross platform capabilities, that'd make us Linux and Mac (I use both) users happy since we hate using cock sucking Windows.

But i think that there aren't many mappers who will really need cross platform map editor... Everybody are using cock sucking Windows...
And i don't want map editor to glitch like all those *cross platform* applications that use variuos runtimes such as gtk or QT...

anna did at some time start rewriting polyworks in C# would be great if we could get a hold of that one instead of coding it in vb6. would be so much easier.

Programs made with those don't glitch. And even if that's what you're worried about, don't; as it could be written in wxWidgets making it use either QT or GTK on *nix and the Windows API on Windows. A good example of that kind of program would be Audacity.

I really can't say so...
And i can mention Gimp as example of gtc-based application which is also can't be described as good example... Even though it have large developers community and is getting updated regularly...

I did set up a basic PMS viewer with JOGL, just to see how it was. Never got to texture loading, but I don't think that it would be too hard. I'm always a fan of Java ;)
