New laptop and vista
« on: March 15, 2009, 04:05:45 pm »
Ok so I got a new laptop and of course it has vista, I am completely fine with that. However I know vista is a pain when it comes to games and of course now I am experiencing those pains. So I was wondering if anyone here can give me a hand in messing around with vista so I can get a little more juice to my game and kill the vampires in my laptop. I have a way of getting an old copy of XP but I want to save that for a last chance thing since I really don't want to deal with backing up and reinstalling.

I'm not that much of an expert on Vista, but perhaps you could describe the problem? Maybe IRC would work better.

its a laptop, thats already bad enough.

Any (really) old games will probably benefit by running in compatibility mode, just right click and go to properties and its in there somewhere.  Is steam working ok?  TF2 has plenty of great FPS saving commands if you need them, at least until multicore support comes along.

According to PCGamer, PC Reader, Microsoft, and a few Gaming websites, it is. It also runs games faster, uses less RAM and memory, and it runs games better. Plus, DX11 will have new, and totally awesome, 3D support systems.

I would only play old games, and turn everything off in the background if possible (antivirus, everything, disconnect from the net first though).  I always did this when I only had my laptop for games and I didnt get half as much slow down as I did with Norton chewing away on my CPU in the background..

Apart from that, there isnt much else to do.  A defrag a day keeps the doctor away :)

Also, try Advanced SystemCare, it's like CCleaner but with some bloatware, which you can use to drastically reduce your current RAM usage (it's good for freeing up some memory when you're about to start a game)

I'd just remove Norton, McAffy, and the other typical shitty antivirus progs that OEM's include. Yeah, just kill those and install AVG Free Home Edition since it's far good enough. Also get Sygate Personal Firewall, or just stick with Windows Firewall if you can't be bothered. Install CCleaner and run it often, especially the error fixer. (after you uninstall the crap that came with it, reboot, then run the error fixer.) Also use CCleaner to remove useless apps that start when you boot your computer.

Or get a free update to Windows 7, which has better gaming features.

I'm not a fan of CCleaner. I don't regularly use a registry cleaner, but I haven't found one I like.

Get ThreatFire, it's good to complement Avast.

I've been using it for five years on Windows machines without a single problem or registry screwup. I'd really like to hear why you're not a fan of it.

registery cleaning is a joke. It certainly doesn't make your computer any faster and most of what the programs see as "Problems" are just empty registry files that windows keeps remaking. If you do it yearly you're worrying too much.

Neither are you. I am actually giving ideas that would make it easier for him once. All it would take is a little effort. After that, he wouldn't have to do all this backdoor stuff through his computer and use programs and end other programs.

I agree with this, QFT.  I don't understand why anyone thinks "registry cleaners" are necessary.
