Possible Proxy slowing down videos and downloads.
« on: April 08, 2009, 06:37:11 pm »
So....My dad likes to have proxies on his server (uber werid proxies) because he thinks its going to protect him from viruses. but so far none of them have. untill now none of them have been a problem for ME. but something he put up....is basicly Scanning every bit of data that comes from videos and downloads and scanning every bit for viruses....this makes them very slow, 2 minute youtube videos take around 5 minutes to load. and we dont have dial up. downloads...is another story, it basicly scans all the data BEFORE it even starts the download.

So anyway i asked him to fix it, and he does not know what he did, and thinks the videos load the same as they used to...any idea what this is, or how to get rid of it?

You say he's putting proxies on a server, are you going through this server to get on the internet?

So, why not just not go through the server?
Or just reinstall whatever OS is on it. Viruses aren't that scary. Proxies will do nothing to protect against them, the best thing to do is to get antivirus software (google: avast) and keep it updated.

if your dad wants to be safe from viruses he should unplug his ethernet cord.

this might sound dumb, but arent proxies servers on the internet that allow other computers connect to them, and surf & etc. over them, so the server gives them his ip adress?

pretty nice ;D

btw. ow, i laughted really good at eC's post (if it is connected to the ip adress)

Tell your father that Norton's achilles heel is its popularity, most virus programmers engineer their viruses to go undetected through its many loopholes.

A proxy doesn't really make you safer. If you look at it on a ratio of 'how much protection it gives' to 'how much time it wastes' you're looking at something like 1 : 46

Get a good browser like FireFox or Opera. Get a good alternative antivirus such as Kaspersky or Bitdefender or Avast.

So your dad knows enough about computers to be able to throw up a proxy on his server, but not enough to know that Norton Antivirus is not the best way to go? That's a weird combination.
