Old School Pistol Duel Maps
« on: April 13, 2009, 11:15:25 am »
Alright, so I have made a few duel maps, but they are just regular maps with small 1v1 arena. Then it struck me - we could make realistic duel mode with the following settings:
1) Map where team a and team b spawn in a screen distance from one another (still can see one another, but relatively far).
2) Only 2 players max, so one player for a and one for b.
3) Players have invisible walls around them and above them, letting them only jump up and maybe use jet a bit, but no big movements to right or to left.
4) Weapon mod is set to one bullet, 999999 damage, pistol, relatively accurate (this can be adjusted). Reload time - very big, but not big enough to get bored waiting.
5) Survival mode

I added a scheme of how map should look.

This mod would let people experience a realistic old school duel. Accuracy and timing is everything. Shoot too soon - you are dead, shoot too late - you are dead. Only one shot. You can still evade by jumping and proning. Calculation is everything.

What do you think guys?

I'd go for very small arenas, but leaving the players move around and so on.

EDIT: I mean maps like this:

How many pixels would 10 paces be? :P  I like this idea :).
For signatures, you are allowed only one image in your signature which may not be wider and taller than 300 and 125 pixels, and may not be over 20kB in file size. No BMPs are allowed.

There distances could vary, but the concept remains - you basically have a few miliseconds to aim your shot and movement after you spawn.

Something like this? :o

Of course I had to try the western theme ;)

Note: alpha/bravo are surrounded by invisible polygons, limiting them to jumping and a little bit to the left/right.

Looks fantastic. Just as I imagined it. Just make sure that the walls surrounding players are slippery and they can't "walk" on them. I tested the map - I think it works great, just need to make the players stand further from each other imo. But actually its not that important.

Also a script would be nice. It could work like this:
1) Everyone who joins is automatically put in spectator mode.
2) Whoever wants to duel, must type "!duel"
3) After this the player is put into queue.

This would let more players join the game and observe, wait in line, chat, etc...

oh sure yes! very nice idea! i cant wait for a new PD maps!

agree with TradeMAAK, scripting would be awesome

btw, these maps can be used with other weapons.ini, not only one-shot...
ruger duels, Deagle duels, minigun duels (lmao), m79 duels - that would be nice too, i think :)

Sure, why not. If I had more time I would gladly make a server that supports this mode, but then I would need at least 10 different maps and a ready script and everything.

I'm an ex-mapper myself. I could modify my ex-duel maps to fit this game mode.

Also, there could be a vote system (scripted) for players to vote what kind of weapon mode they want (all weapons, normal or pistol - 1 bullet, 1 hit=1kill)

A nick registration for server would also be nice, so you can view highscores of best duellers.

Yep, also not a bad idea. We could have small maps like that in cycle, too.

The more diversity, the longer the fun lasts.

Well, if there are some scripters and mappers who could make small arena maps and make a script for this gamemode, contact me. I am ready to pay for hosting of this server.

PS: Just thought of another cool script. Spectators could place bet on who is going to win the certain round. Maybe use the money they win to purchase some bonuses like bulletproof vest or cluster nades!

Yep, this server could be a lot of fun!

I could assist in scripting a queue/weapon system. As for stats I suggest using currywurts' login system.

Let's go over the scripting a bit:

1) Everyone who joins is automatically put in spectator mode.
2) Whoever wants to duel, must type "!duel"
3) After this the player is put into queue.

I don't think you need a command to get IN the queue, everybody who joins wants in it, probably. But a command to get OUT the queue and acknowledge that the player is ready to enter the 'arena' would come in more handy. That way you can be sure that someone who waits as spec for a long hasn't left when it's his turn. There would be a time-frame to enter the command (3 secs or so) and if a player doesn't react he gets bumped in to the queue again and the person behind him gets a go.

Another thing is what to do at the end of a round. If there are a total of three players in the server, one player should stay in the arena after every round. At first this could be the winner, but if a player wins twice you'd like him out as well. Will the same rules apply if four or more players are ingame? Or should then both players in the arena go back to queue. Do keep in mind that with an even number of players ingame there might be no variety in opponents. And on top of that: what to do with a player who's opponent just leaves the arena after one minute or so? Still following me?

Also, there could be a vote system (scripted) for players to vote what kind of weapon mode they want (all weapons, normal or pistol - 1 bullet, 1 hit=1kill)

Tricky, on one hand you don't want to make this too complicated. But, it is possible that players will be spectating quite a lot and that gives them time to enter commands that clear up their wishes about prefered weapons.
Anything is possible here, but there will always be some random factor if two players have total different wishes.

Ok, think about this stuff and I might just help you out ;)

What about having 2 duels at same time? Alpha-Bravo and Charlie-Delta?

No, this will overly complicate everything.

Ok, I will work on scripting part now.
