What's your opinion of the current minigun?

I like it. Don't change it.
I hate it. Don't change it.
It's too powerful - too much damage
It's too powerful - easily abused
It's too weak - not enough damage
It's too weak - clip size is too small
The startup time ruins an otherwise usable gun
It's too fast!

The minigun - Where does it stand?
« on: June 10, 2006, 03:45:22 pm »
The minigun is the Marmite of the weapons. People will either love using it, either as a novelty weapon or a serious primary, or hate it, and won't touch it with a ten foot pole.
Something doesn't seem quite right about the minigun still. Even if it only needs tiny adjustments, give your ideas here.

I personally think it could use a bit more damage, and a leetle bit less bullet speed. This would make it more usable, whilst lowering the surfing potential of it.

Ok, my rundown:

The first two choices should  be one > Don't Change it (which is what i selected)

Too Powerful - yeah, when you have 10% life
Easily Abused - Michal fixed that - no more surfing
Too weak - it's massive speed compensates for that
Clip Size Too Small - 100? I think not?
Startup Time - The startup isn't too long or too bad.
Too fast - Compensates for weak damage

That's just what I think.
The computer is a moron.

The only bad thing about it is long reload... It is a useful weapon if you have the skill.

I can manage 4 or so kills from a clip (without spraying).

It's far too weak/inaccurate to pose much of a threat to even below-average players. Less bink, stronger bullets, quicker reload. It might not become popular in clanwars, but at least we'll see more of it on pubs. It's as much of a joke as the Saw is right now.
I change my ingame name constantly. Look out for my colour scheme, it's the only way you'll recognize me.

Or I could just keep a list...

Current ingame name: Proxy/Running Man

This thread encouraged me to try out the Minigun on a couple of public servers. I tried to play seriously with it, and I must admit it's more effective than I thought in the past. I think it only needs minor tweaking. I suggest a bit more damage and slightly less self-bink. Some might argue that the reload time should be lowered as well, but I think the huge clip makes up for it, not to mention that a socom is the common sense secondary for it. The changes don't need to be drastic, just enough to make it effective for actual use.

Easily Abused - Michal fixed that - no more surfing
I see people surf with the minigun just as much now as before, especially in clan wars during the last minute or so. I don't mind it though. It's rarely effective.

If you wave your mouse up and down, the self-bink is drastically reduced... so poses and accuracy advantage...

i agree with BJB.....i think it's pretty much good as it is.
Your acting like your having a duel and your opponent gets a pistol and you get a spork.
Isn't that pretty much what it is? I dunno wtf a spork is, I suppose it's way weaker than the pistol since you compared that to this.

Yeah, people still minisurf just fine with it, but that's not a problem. My only complaints is the awful slowdown / frame rate dropping that comes with minigun use, giving it a completely unfair advantage. You should be able to easily pick off a minigunner with a Ruger or any distance weapon. You cannot because the stupid frame rate drop and/or slowdown kills your aim, along with the bink from the minigunner and the weapon's ability to pretty much stop you from getting any closer, particularly annoying with a minisurfer.

The minigun also has that horrible option to fly above the map, raining shots all over the field. It's horrible when an enemy constantly hovers far too high over your base, raining down shots and slowdown on your spawn point. This strategy is just too effective; no weapon can easily reach the hovering minigunner, and the bink makes taking him out with the barret or LAW more difficult than it really should be.

It's really the only weapon I don't mind seeing banned from servers for those reason. I don't see how to "fix" the minigun either, since the large number of shots fired will still cause and allow the above problems. It's even worse with multiple minigunners on a single map, and most maps are really too small to handle that many fired shots without affecting everyone regardless of position.

I think the best solution for it is on leo's servers. I sometimes use it as a support and/or suppressing fire

IMO the minigun has been much improved in the latest version (or maybe its only me who gave it a second chance) It is a weapon wich can actually be used now, but still... A bit more power to it would be nice, not much tho, and something to fix the surfing, I hate it, anyone can take a mingun and do a few caps >_<

I absolutely loved the old old OLD minigun (pre-1.0.5). It was overpowered back then, of course. And it didn't come with self bink.

Would locking player movement hamper the minigun's effectiveness aside from minisurfing and hovering? I think that could be a good way to curb the problems most have with it, but then I honestly don't use it and would be a poor judge to gauge its usefulness and tactics. Given the way it fires and that long start up, though, I can't image really moving around while firing as you would with any other weapon. Since the LAW is bound to the ground with the added startup time, too, I think it wouldn't be too out there as far as an additional requirement for usage. Adding some power to its shots but preventing the player from moving around would be a good trade off I think.

I think the self-bink ruins the minigun. Try setting it to zero in the weapons ini, and you'll see it still sprays, so I'd say -4 bink would be nice.

You mean the saw is a 'joke'?

You obviously have not seen the saw in it's full potential use.  Same idea to the minigun - everyone know how devastating the saw can be when used correctly.. Same with the mini.

I can't say I support that idea. Right now the minigun is underpowered, and you're discussing ways to bring it down further. Even if you add power to the shots, making the minigun immobile will take away one of its best elements: getting up and personal with your enemy and shooting him with all you've got. Not many people are going to rush towards a stationary minigunner; they're going to stay back and get the most out of their shots while the minigunner struggles to maintain accuracy from a long distance. The minigun just isn't effective at that range. The minigunner needs to be able to maneuver closer to his enemy to stand much chance at taking him down.

In my opinion, the minigun doesn't need anymore disadvantages. It's time we give it a little boost.

The minigun is trash.  The only situation that people may use it is in a last ditch doomed attempt to get a cap unless by some godsend they manage to "Lag" away.  I think it needs to be reworked increasing its damager per bullet won't make more people use it.  Half of being "good" in soldat is moving effectivly which involves gaining momentum.  The mini gun can hamper your movement too much when you try to move foward and shoot at the same time (same thing sorta with spas but not as much) which puts it at a severe disadvantage with other guns where it is relativly easy to move and shoot.

BTW I do not recall the last time the minigun was used seriously in a cw (even s4r barely uses it raffle)

In a one on one situation, I can usually take out an m79, barret or possibly a ruger with ease.
