Reputation/Karma System.
« on: May 14, 2009, 05:04:15 am »
I noticed it here.

It has been suggested, but I think a re-think wouldn't hurt.

What are your thoughts?

A ranking system like that is no different from post count except that others make it rise or fall instead of you. I don't think there's really a need for those ranks even if it is to merely show the level of respect around the forums. Once a person has been around for long enough, he can easily distinguish the respected figures from the rest. Not forgetting that every person has a different opinion of another, but you can generally tell each person apart from experience and observation.

Secondly, people change. A great guy can become a troll, and a troll can become a great guy - then the reputation that was originally accumulated doesn't show anything, it'd be a misrepresentation. Don't forget the case whereby people put "GIVE ME NEGATIVE REP" in their signatures and they get negative rep. Again, that is also a big misrepresentation.

It is ultimately unnecessary to have such a system, and it's likely to cause more problems.

Once again, logic prevails.

A ranking system is like Capitalism in a way. It SHOULD separate the smart from the dumb, the ones who work hard should get the rewards, and not the ones who did nothing at school. Usually it does, but as you say, people change. What may once have been a good solid forumer, might become a pathetic troll. I think I'll edit my first post...

It's pointless and we had it before several times and it got removed after a while each time.

OBEY!!!

We had it for a while and eventually it was removed in 2007. Some members (me, when I was still a moron) had like -500 karma. I wouldn't mind trying it again.

Also, I suggest you don't have useless options in your poll, like "not sure" or "don't care" as that just encourages people to make useless votes making the actual poll results inaccurate. You'd be better off with a simple Yes or No, without any other options.

On some other forum I saw similar system, but you could only increase or decrease one point for week. Or something like that. Even so I remember how it looked I'm all for bringing the karma system again.

One point per day to any member, positive or negative.
Known trolls should not be able to give karma at all.+
We all start from 0 karma and admins shouldn't go shitting around giving like +1000 karma to some members to keep it somewhat serious.

Why not, I never got to try it.

New things can't hurt that bad.

right, and this time around we shouldn't take it for more than just a good laugh, in which case it'll be perfectly suitable.

12 vs. 14.

We need more votes to make a proper decision.
