moderators too strict
« on: May 19, 2009, 08:58:32 am »
I know this topics gonna get locked since we're no longer allowed to have opinions in this forum anymore. but I believe that the moderators on this forum are too strict. I don't get why your trying to turn this forum into a f**king coffee shop, whats the point of being mature if its boring. its a f**king gaming forum! we should be allowed to be assholes

also bring back bash pit or lighten up in the lounge!!!!!!!!!!!

Please guys, don't spam it so that it would become locked. Give some proper input.

Define "lighten up the lounge".

I think these forums are generally quite open to ideas and opinions, but the problem lies in the fact that overtime, the same old things keep appearing over and over until they get boring, or the members can't seem to even properly make something nice. As a result, everything has to be iron-fisted. I think the bash pit is fine, but it seems that no one could use it right.

Other than deciding to increase the average warning level given (particularly for known trolls), I'm not so sure how we're more strict than before.

And yea, how could the Lounge be 'lightened'?

reduce the number of moderators assigned to the lounge (why do we need 6 moderators on the lounge? lol) and stop locking topics unless they are like about hacks or something, also stop locking topics just because their supposed to be in the link dump. there is wayyyy too many rules

The Lounge is the most active section. And normally topics are locked for a reason, just as the Link Dump is stickied for a reason.

I don't think they are being too strict at all.  And no, I don't think the forums are crap now it's just people like you that make it crap.  Moo if you want a place with no rules and no locking threads why dont you check out 4chan?

Unknownsniper what makes you say that the moderators aren't following the rules?

And what's with the constant spam to get the bash pit back?

Also it's sort of funny that most of the people complaining here are doing it because they have warnings.

you know, have just understood: this is THE OFFICIAL soldat forums, right? we have some developers here, right? ... i think, m00', they MUST be strict :-\ have nothin to do with this, cause in other way we wouldnt have REAL OFFICIAL FORUMS, only fans community pages.

10000 of users... hmmm... all of these going to become very Serious forums :(... ehhh

then, better, jrgp plz answer the question: is it possible to restore good-old soldatforums athmosphere? less seriously and lil bit more fun? fewer warners and watchers, more friendly mods/admins?

IMO, the problem with the forum is that the most active part is the lounge. I mean, shouldn't the game be the most focused topic. The game itself is what makes this forum unique and the game is what attracted all the members to this forum. Otherwise, I should just go to any other forum and see the same thing there.

As for the mods, I don't think the moderators are being strict but I agree that 6 mods is somewhat over the top and shows where the most activity lies.

Ehh, I've disagreed with a few decisions the mods have made. For the most part they are at a level where I like [only shitty spam/trolling is bad]. I don't have a problem if someone gets a warning when they post retarded poop, but if it brings enjoyment and contribution to thread then it should be left alone. Which is what seems to happen.

By joining and participating in posting on this forum, you've agreed to follow the forum rules (whether you've actually read them or not), and any warnings handed out and threads locked are done at a moderator's discretion. That's all there is to it. If you don't like it, no one is making you stay here. There's a line between having fun and acting like a spamming and trolling idiot, but unfortunately, that line is becoming blurred. Now we're trying to repaint it.

For me, I ask that you take heed of this: I enforce the rules but I didn't make them.

The moderators are great. You want to be an ass? Well we don't, so please leave. I think it's great. It's good to have a good silly feet every once in a while, but mature conversations actually get places and you get some good thoughts and opinions. I think they're fine, I give them props.

Actually I tend to agree to an extend with this. The problem, as I see it, is that there's also some serious topics being posted every once in a while here, and those are more important than the crappy rediculous ones all together. In order to make sure they aren't spammed up, you have to be equally strict with the rest fo them as well. I myself am trying not to be too strict, though I'll admit I have my ban-them-all moments from time to time.

Lately I've been hammeirng down hard on people who spammed up serious topics, while I've been a little less ironfistish with the rest of them. How be your thoughts on that, mateys?

Moderators are too strict. He's absolutely right, we can't do anything here. I've been watched for some ridiculous things over and over again. M00, I wish I had known you before, but still, you shouldn't generalize all of them as being strict like fu**...Some of them even explain themselves (via pm and the likes) to people.
Demonic :)
For an example, has been the moderator so far to explain to me why I got a warning, and answer my stupid questions in a polite manner.
However, receiving warnings for reasons like "General blowheadedness"?!
"Back seat moderating"---What is that?
"Being an idiot" ....At least use some sore of "gentler" language!
Will you?!

Well, you are the mods, you decide what kind of people can post here. If you leave them continue posting then it's your fault, i guess.

Funniest shit I've heard all day.  Do you realize the paradox contained within your statement?

Oh, it's our fault for letting people continue to post on the forums.  But when we take action, what do we get?  Topics like this.  Heh.

Grow up people.  There's a page of rules.  Always has been, always will be.  Read 'em, learn 'em, love 'em, but don't expect to act in total disregard for them.

As a mod/admin, I've let plenty of warnable stuff slide.  It's always a judgment call, and not everything that gets reported or catches out eye gets acted on.  Why?  Because we're not (total) fascists.

Notable people who have caught a break for otherwise warnable actions include many of the people who are complaining about mods being too strict in this topic.  And that's a shame.

You see, when you don't get warned for being a complete asshat, there's a fair chance someone took a look at your actions and decided to let it slide.  But because some people on here oftentimes fail to hold themselves to any sort of standard and resort to being total boobs at the drop of a hat - we are forced to take action.

Long story short - you know we pay attention to you, why not pay some attention to your own actions when you get warned/banned?  Instead of sulking about things and saying the mods are too strict, man up and learn a lesson.  And while you're at it, be thankful for this brief interim of ban hammerings after three strikes.

The new warning system was meant to allow more appropriate warning levels for minor crap.  But due to people failing to pay attention to this and receiving many warnings for the same infringement with effectively no negative consequences, we had to step up the bar a bit.

And that's how it currently stands.  So when you get warned for swearing/avoiding filters - stop doing it!  Warned for backseat modding?  It means you managed to look like a jerk telling other forum members what the should/can/cannot do.  That's our job, not yours.

And we do that job - at the risk of going too far, getting bitched at, slandered, and other various forms of backlash.  Rest assured that the state of the forums and what should be done to make sure everyone gets along like peaches and cream with the minimum amount of frustration is never too far from our discussion.

Do not confuse this with the ineptitude to not take action when action is needed.

Good day.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

I can't believe I'm stroking moo's ePenis by posting in this.

I have to say I like the mods about how they are. This forum is mostly laid back but doesn't stupid trolls and idiots that make a forum worse, not better. If you want a place where you can post crap and be "funny" go to 4chan.

They aren't but they should be, considering all clown performances, net-"hatred" and pathetic intrigue nets that swarm the forums. If it wasn't for your useless strive to be unique and funny on a FORUM, by promoting orkish trends and magnetizing hatred from people, who don't really know what it is to hate... Then maybe you wouldn't blame peeps for the screamy topics or the mods for warning and banning in a poetic way, even.
Still, you feel powerless when a mod locks a topic, silencing everybody with sharp poetic sarcasm. Then they get all the ovations... and you can't get at them because of their position.

Also, there are the peaceful folks who spread butterflies and make compliments to mods, so they can gather higher rating and later on, use their beloved persona and become one of them irritating egobitches, telling people how stuff works like they own the forums.

To sum up... no fun without orks... no fun with orks... Nobody wins, eh.
Keep it as it is, and don't knit intrigues from which irritated people (like myself)
will respond and then you'll go egowhining about it.

That's to all itchy zits. I take full responsibility for my words.

M00, I wish I had known you before, but still, you shouldn't generalize all of them as being strict like fu**...Some of them even explain themselves (via pm and the likes) to people.
Demonic :)
For an example, has been the only moderator so far to explain to me why I got a warning, and answer my stupid questions in a polite manner.
However, receiving warnings for reasons like "General blowheadedness"?!
"Back seat moderating"---What is that?
"Being an idiot" ....At least use some sore of "gentler" language!
Will you?!

To be fair, back in the day I used to send friendly warnings to people - telling them that they're going on a wrong road. Other times people will kept at a high warning level to have pressure on them. It was tedious task, and more of an active care taking of the members rather than just doing staff-rolls. It required attention, but it had good results. People improved up to the point where I actually liked them.

As of late though, with the members getting younger and younger, I've less and less patience for that. There's just no way in hell that any of us from the staff can hold your hand while you hit a higher level of maturity - so we stick to slapping warnings around like no tomorrow.

And as Geo put - when we do warn, that's usually not due to the mod being extra grumpy, but that you had way too many shit slide already.

As for gentler language... come on. This is a forum for a video game where you can mow down people with a chainsaw. Fuck me.

Either way, I don't really mind at all - I have a pretty high tolerance for these kind of things. To be honest, I prefer a community with a higher level of maturity, or at least, knowing when to put up (genuinely amusing) quality nonsense and when to be serious.

Contrary to what some of you may believe, Demonic` was once nice and cuddly as he described. He gave me the following verbal warning a while ago:

The reasonable explanation thing was for Meecrob and his cheat engine.

Look, over the past time you've been improving a bit, and a lot of shit you get is just unfair trolling. But if you move between the lines drawn by guys like bja and Fluffy ( back-seat moderating, overly trying to be funny, you will respect me or else yadda-yadda ), it will go on forever.

But to put it short, from my totally subjective point of view: you managed to slip into a neutral zone for me, and I'd hate to hate you again.

's all in all friendly advice. Have fun foruming.

And...yeah, everything Demonic and Geo have said is pure gold when it comes to accuracy.

@jrgp: you still have that? haha. (:

Hey, if anyone, then I only won with Soldat. There have been good friends made (text_killer and the_bug from hungary), there were awesome people met (maka and Ender from the old soldat.nl, n00bface), and all because in the very beginning, there were some fellows who pumelled me to pulp, tore me to pieces, shoved me down and what not - seriously, at age 14, I was worse than any of the current forum base.

Now, with FLAB, jrgp, Enesce and Shoozza behind the codes, Geo and Vij representin' mature authoritAY, I'm the only one left who did the 'regular' soldat jump school with every possible community and shit... never needed to be the best player, the most successful server owner, the greatest mapper, because there were always some people who were better or just astounding with the energy they put into this crap - but I know how this place ticks.

And unlucky for you, since my example worked, God help me, you are going to either go through the same or die from forum abuse. ;)

I almost feel bad about doing jack shit when it comes to moderating. To be honest, I could really care less how this place is run, as long as it is moderated to some extent. As it stands, there is no possible way to strictly apply our forum rules to every single offense; as Geo said, it's a judgment call. This is clearly stated in the forum rules.

As far as I can tell, Geo and Demo typically refrain from unleashing the rage all over your face unless you deserve it.
