Soldat Online Version
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:08:29 pm »
What do you think of a simplified version of Soldat available as a "free online game". So when you visit http://www.soldat.pl there could be a page that actually has the game as a simplified version.

The Good
~ people who can't install it (not admin or on public PC) can play
~

The Bad
~ to make it much smaller, you may need to eliminate online capabilities or only have a few maps

Soldat will never be programmed for portable consoles/machines, or probably even regular gaming consoles (Michal doesn't have the money nor the time to do so, and even then gameplay probably would flop on such systems. Although if you want to use Soldat on Linux, feel free to help with the Soldat Wine project.)
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that that statement covers a web browser version as well...

Although, if someone has enough time on their hands (not MM or EnEsCe or anyone on the dev team), they could possibly make a flash version.

That statement suggests a cost, which wouldn't really be an issue, unless a developer requires one.

Remember, this is simply a suggestion that could improve the game. I don't mind if it happens or not.

If it is going to be done, know that the actual developers won't be the ones making this flash/web version of Soldat - it'd be a fan tribute.

It's actually a good idea if you can dig up the resources yourself, as STM said, it ought to be a fan tribute for the community to advertise soldat. However right now I would rather stick to making movies and banners for soldat, as a flash game would definitely show something a lot weaker than soldat is.

Mmm yeah and somehow it would be underplayed, considering how easy and simple it is to set up soldat...

I don't think it's such a good idea.
How do you want to ensure that the flash version and the normal version are fair if one is simplified?
Also you would need a better PC for a nice soldat flashgame.
It might be easier for the new people or when you don't have the time or possibility to install it
but it would require a complete rewrite and I don't think you thought about BattlEye or who would keep it up to date...
Also offline gaming isn't that much fun.

Another problem with flash is that you cannot "program" like you would do it with Delphi or any other "real" programming language. In flash everything is saved in one binary file (code and graphics).

Not nice to keep track of what has been changed.
Don't understand me wrong flash is nice for games but not for porting soldat to it at least not now.

Depends...you don't know until you have tried it so basically you can't say it's a good or bad idea in the first place. You may have ur first impressions or opinions although it would be nice if people would allow something to be given a shot.
