Soldat running bad on *some* multicore systems
« on: June 14, 2009, 07:24:04 am »
Hello folks,

since I've got a dualcore system Soldat seemed to run worse than on my old singlecore system. Recently I found the reason for this: Soldat simply runs very bad on *some* multicore systems, even worse than with a singlecore.

Solution to this problem: Before joining a server respectively starting an actual game you should set Soldat.exe's affinity to only 1 of your CPU cores. Open Windows Taskmanager, perform a right click on Soldat.exe and select "Set affinity".

Do you feel Soldat runs better now? Because on MY system the difference is HUGE and there might be people out there that have the same problem and just didnt find any solution yet. That's the reason for posting this.

//edit: If you know a better solution, let us know! :)

Best regards,
BattleMaker

Heh... Actually, I use Dual Core, and Soldat runs much much faster than my previous single core Intel CPU. I just tried switching it as you said, and it lost ~30 FPS. So uh, I wouldn't quite blame Soldat for this one. Are you using AMD?

No, it's a notebook with an Intel Dual Core @2.26GHz. OS is Windows Vista.

One of my friends, who plays Soldat, also reported that on his multicore system Soldat runs much better with only 1 core assigned to Soldat.exe.

Well, it might not be Soldat's fault, but one thing is for sure: The issue exists and there might be people having the same problem.

To describe the problem more exactly:
It's sort of a small lag all over the time. Soldat just doesnt seem to run smoothly. In multiplayer mode as well as in single player (local) mode (for the last it's quite less noticeable).

//EDIT:
On my system only assigning 1 core to Soldat.exe instead of 2 neither increases nor decreases FPS (FPS most of the time is around 230, sometimes falling down to 140 or getting up to 350 for a very short time).
Of course it's not the problem "too much" or "not enough" CPU power. I think some systems just cant manage to switch cores on the fly properly for Soldat.exe automatically.

Try opening a flash application in Firefox, see if that boosts your FPS.

It's NOT a problem of having a very low FPS. I wrote above that I always have around 220 FPS...

Well, if it isn't an FPS problem, it may be that you have a singlethreaded program that is using up a bit more CPU time than usual, thus why setting affinity to one core solves the problem, as it is no longer affected by that program.

Let's see what happens when I get my dual-core up and running.

There is not any problem for me. I always have 400-500 fps.
